Thanks Dave, I wondered if that would be the case after I made that last post.

I had an order for the 60213 placed, and marklin automatically changed it to a 60214 with no change in price. So I'm quite happy with that, the August delivery however is another question. Although I suppose they may be having to be rather strategic as to which items get the capital allocated for production at present.
Cheers....

That is good for you. I received an email from my dealer recently saying that the list price for the 60214 will be US$1049 as opposed to the 60213's list price of US$899.

Dear Mr. ########,
The next update shall be available in may. Plese excuse but our qualitiy department hasn´t given it´s okay to the next update yet. That´s the reason, why we cannot tell you an exact date for the next update. If this okay is here, the update will be available at once.
Sincerely yours,
Your Maerklin Customer Service
From the information I've got, the FREE update for CS-II (#60213) should now be ready for release around end of May/beginning of June 2009.
It will contain numerous bug fixes and enhancements; current CS-II customers should be quite satisfied with it.
It will NOT contain any DCC support. An UPGRADE is planned for those customers who wish that and will be offered in conjunction with the release of the DCC CS-II (#60214); likely to be available in the 4th quarter 2009. It will NOT be free of charge (although the exact amount (RRP) has not been finalized it can be expected to be around 50-60€).
Thanks Lutz - I hope your sources are correct. Don't need DCC myself so maybe all will be well.

This is at odds with what Dr Tom Catherall published in a recent Digital Newsletter. I guess it means that Marklin have changed their minds!

Hi Lutz. That sounds OK as DCC was not part of the package when i bought my CS2. My only problem is that June is now mentioned and the fact that the update is free is expected as it is to correct faults in the CS2 which should not have been there from the start. In view of the constant delays and the lack of an apology from Marklin to their customers there may have been a case for providing the DCC upgrade free to those who wished it which would have been great for public relations.
In any event I am more than happy with the controller and hope that customers will buy the newer version which should be about as good as anybody would want.

Note: text updated regarding DCC support
I would be very suspicious of any claim to
full support
for anything.
In the first instance there is the constant evolution of standards and recommended practices with working group submissions , some of which will not become official BUT WILL be adopted by their sponsoring vendor (in anticipation and/or as "we can do this" marketing hype)
And secondly , interoperability. To obtain
full support
their are usually limitations on what can be connected together concurrently.
If someone can list what
level/version
of support and interoperability that Marklin (because that is all that matters here) is offering in the 60213 and 60314 products it would be appreciated.

As far as I understand from Lutz's comments in this and other threads, the 1.0.7 update for 60213 will give it the ability to control DCC equiped locomotives, but not control DCC equiped soleniods and accessories. 60214, when released, will have all these abilities. To upgrade 60213 to 60214 capabilities, you will have to pay Marklin some amount of money.

I presume therefore that no longer May but now June. Much better if they just said they did not know when it would be available which considering this started several months ago the obviously dont know.
I would appreciate hearing that they are very sorry that they have got it wrong but will put things right as soon as possible and leave it at that.

As I stated a long time ago, I just hope that they release it before my warranty runs out. I have a few small issues that I am not sure if they are software ore hardware related.

There is a 2 year warranty on this product; considering the first deliveries were only in October 2008 there should be no fear at all.
Thanks for reminding me. I was thinking it was a one year warranty.

Today's slow, slow reply to my April 27th query:
"Sehr geehrter Herr Aives,

Good news!
The Version 1.1.3. (GFP 1.22) is now by means of Router to find in the Märklin Sync.-server.
The online-version in the Märklin Download 1-2 days later.

Hi
Very bad. After the update I receive the message:
<u>
The last update was not successful
</u>
...
I think this happens because I have the version 1.0.7...
Any suggestions?

Well, I've installed the update, and just had a quick try.
The control of two-motor double slips (K-track 2275 via k83 decoder) still isn't right, and the CS2 can only be used to control one of these if you separate the two motors and control them individually. Has anyone else tried to use this feature?
It worked fine with the CS1 (2.0.4 version).
This was the first thing I tried, as it's been wrong in all versions of the CS2. I'm quite disappointed about this as I reported it to Märklin myself (ages ago)!

Just updated my CS2 this AM. It actually updated like it is supposed to this time. No problems so far. Seems like a few changes to the Loco list. Just wondering if you can add your own .png pictures with this update?

Thanks, Steven. Yes, I know how to do this. The trouble is that it doesn't work properly.
If you look at a 2275 double slip from one end to the other, you can consider that there is a left-side curve and a right-side curve. The icons on the CS2 show these options and also the two possible "straight-through" options.
The left-side curve requires both point motors to be at one extremity, and the right-side curve requires both point motors to be at the other extremity. However, pressing the icons on the CS2 to change from the left-side curve setting to the right-side curve only switches one of the motors. The assignment of the point motor switching to the icons is incorrect, and it cannot be fixed by rewiring the point motors or any other adjustment I can find.
The CS2 has always been wrong in this respect, but the CS1 was correct. I believe that the track layout and point motor wiring that works for the CS1 should also work for the CS2, but it doesn't.
That's my complaint! I've tried to explain this to Märklin, but they haven't listened!

As I can't read much German, should I just hook up the CS2 to my modem/router and let it call home for the update?
Worked fine the last time, but I don't know what they said in their instructions. It would seem that they would post the message in English somewhere as it is more universal than German. But, I am very happy that they have posted.
Thanks,
Eric

Hello All:
I just downloaded the update, as well, so far so good
I was just wondering what all of those new icons mean
Is there a list of their functions somewhere (preferable in english)

Hi all,
I have made a translation of the german text for the update:
"The new version 1.1.3 is ready for automatic update. CS2 users can use the build-in update function by connecting the device to a network with Internet connection. As soon as the device is connected to the network (indicated by blinking green and yellow LEDs) the update can be initiated."
In short this means: plug it in and hit update after a few seconds. Standard procedure
The LEDs are the once on the back in the network plug.
Best,
Burnix

Thanks Eric, and you're right!
I've been around the interface a bit, and I haven't been able to interpret completely the new DCC decoder programming method which does support Programming On the Main (POM). I don't see a "conventional" DCC programming interface as it was previously.
This new one appears to be more complex to operate, but also customizable. CVs can be "baptised" and a "portfolio" of CVs may be created as required and the resulting decoder profile may be saved. Thus, one may create a profile for Lopi v2, another for Lopi v3, another for LS v3.5, etc, etc. Without instructions, the way I understand the programming process is like this:
1 - Create profiles for your DCC decoders and save them. Each CV in the profile will then be identified by the name you give it;
2 - Call an existing or create a new DCC lok;
3 - Load the relevant decoder profile (e.g. Lopi v3);
4 - Change the values of the CVs as required;
5 - The profile and the CV values become embedded with each DCC loco you have and is saved together with the loco information.
This is a really clever process, which reduces the crypticism of DCC CV programming but also makes it more complex and initially more time consuming. Also, different firmware versions of the same decoder models may have different or new CVs, so care is required.

opps,
you are right. my fault.
I forgot to mention:
this version does not allow to create new DCC locos. This will be possible with the DCC version of the update coming in fall.
All former created DCC loco will be still available after the update and fully configurable.
Waiting for the DCC update, you can create now a lot of "fake" DCC locos before making the update on 1.1.3. So they will be maintained and you can implement new DCC locos until fall.

Had I known that, I would have done so...
I'm not sure I'll keep the CS2 and CS1 though. I may sell both and go EcOS anyway.
I would really like to know whether will it possible to connect and use a CS1 v3.0 as slave and a CS2 as master... This would be very nice for me, due to my plans for using the CS1 as turntable/Bw area dedicated controller.

Hello,
the master/slave modus needs a software comunication between the 2 controllers, this means a software interface. I do not think that Märklin and ESU will create this common software interface together.
With a CS1 2.04 maybe, who knows?

A hardware interface is announced by Märklin to connect a CS1 2.x.x to a CS2, but it is not clear whether it would work with a CS1 v3.x.x. Märklin says "possibly will not".
If a CS1 v2.x.x is supposed to work with a CS2, conceivably an EcOS v1.x.x could also work.
Let's see what happens. and when and if the CS1-CS2 will ever surface.

Probably a matter of habits, only..[:o)] We all have our own way of doing things and tend to have got into a routine...
Older than 20 it's hard to change
Reading you from far , this concept of "decoder profile" looks interesting .I'd be not surprised if it is coupled with card reader system in the future . Who knows !!??
There must be something to do....
It reminds me the "teaching skills" of Marklin Chief of developpment of the CS2 . During the eighties ( or early nineties) he has been writing & publishing some books to popularize computing & programming , how to bring computers into general use , making computing accessible for everybody...( popularization books . encouraging the use of computers - ..pfff..I hope my English is understandable...[:(] )

Hello All:
This is just a follow up to my previous post. The CS2 update looks and works fine
. Hopefully I can upload a photo of my Reihe K (37055) in .png form to the controller now, instead of using the default BR59 picture
.
The keyboard error has been fixed[:o)], and I have a wonderfull assortment of new function icons to use[:p]. Of course it would be a great help to know exactly why I need 3 different icons for telex coupling
, why I need 3 icons for designating light direction
, or just what most of the new pictograms are supposed to represent
.
All in all, I'm just glad that mother M finally released the much anticipated update[:p].

Well, I'm sorry to say that I'm not doing very well with this new version of the CS2 software at all!
Apart from the loco selection function, which has been completely redesigned to support a large number of locos, I think it's fair to say that none of my issues has been addressed. The 2-motor double slip problem is still there (see above) and there's still no support for function decoders.
But I've got some new problems, too. mfx loco recognition doesn't work at all for me now. I can't add an mfx loco to the CS2 - if I place a new loco on the track nothing happens at all. I've tried disconnecting everything from the CS2 except for an empty programming track and placing a loco there, but still nothing happens.
Also, the response time for mfx locos that are already defined is enormous. For example, on pressing the button to turn on loco headlights it can take up to 30 seconds before the lights come on! All other functions like speed change or reverse direction take a similarly long time to happen. This is not usable! Non-mfx locos respond immediately, as you would expect.
There's a Help system error on the loco selection screen (I was hoping for a clue as to how to make mfx work) - if you press the question mark an error comes up: "hilfe/en/lok_auswahl.html". I presume this means there's a missing file.
My present CS2 is fairly recent (hardware version 3.4), and it worked very well with the 1.0.5 software (apart from the known issues), so I'm rather disturbed at my current results. I've been looking forward to this new release for months!
I hope there's a solution to these difficulties soon. Any helpful suggestions welcome!
Nigel
