Hello,
M* recommends that the wheel bearings for all new wagons and cars be oiled before use. What is the best way to oil them?
I used the nozzle of my oil bottle to do this but too much oil gets there and creates a mess on the tracks. I have been running my newer ones without oil.
Can I use a syringe with a needle? What do you use?

Thanks

I indeed use a syringe with a needle. Just a drop on any bearing. Oiling is certainly useful.
See other threads about axles wearing through the plastic bushings in a year.

I usually catch a drop of oil on a needle or a small screwdriver, and then applies it with that.

I use Fleischmann oil and the bottle comes with a needle applicator. You can easily make a needle applicator by taking a wine bottle cork (after first emptying the bottle into a wine glass) and sticking a sewing needle into the cork, sharp point first. When you dip the other end into the oil the eye will pick up a little oil. An applicator like that can also be used for applying very small amounts of adhesive.

Hi Gautham,

In my Tips section I wrote this article on lubrication

http://members.ozemail.c.../rms/pdf/lubrication.pdf

I hope it is of some help.

Gautham - Radio Shack has needle oilers that I find perfect for my models. You can put a tiny drop virtually anywhere.

The Hag oil comes with a long metal needle on it. I also have syringes with blunt tips I can use.

Thanks everyone for your tips.
I was reminded of oiling the bearings after I saw the posts where the axels were wearing through the bushes.

Home made, very cheap - most efficient tool to control the amount of oil.

Thanks Henk. The tool shown works splendid for me. I never get oil on the wheel flanges nor do I get excessive oil, but the controlled amount of oil goes direct onto the axle ends and bushes as I take advantage of the slight side movement of the axle when applying the oil. Just enough room.
The problem with various syringes I find is that you easily come to apply maybe 2 drops or more instead of only the 1 intended.

Ozzmans suggestion is very good, it goes along the same line as mine I think wink
