I came across a Marklin 6153 30VA Transformer (metal case) in very fine condition. By all indications, it was well cared for or saw little use. I wired it up to an oval of C track and ran a 3034 locomotive for a few laps. No issues other than the pulse from the transformer to reverse direction is extremely strong. Is this typical for these old transformers or is there some servicing or component that needs to be replaced?

The 6153 is one of the earlier transformers that may be affected by deteriorating wires, which can lead to a short circuit between the wire and the transformer housing. Additionally, the transformer is designed for 110-115VAC and if plugged into 120VAC will produce an output that is 4 to 9% higher, meaning that a 23VAC inversion surge might result in a surge of over 25VAC to the locomotive, which could damage any electronic inversion unit or digital decoder. Furthermore, the top setting of the regular dial with 120VAC input may trip the inversion relay on some models unexpectedly.
It is for this reason that the current transformers rated for 117-120VAC be used to keep the inversion pulse within normal limits

Hi
These transformers were very good, sturdy and safe BUT, at the time:
- no one really cared about the voltage of the direction impulse. While it was supposed to be 20 V max (low voltage for kids) Märklin decided to increase it to 24 VAC
- many people advised to purchase a lower ranked voltage (210 VAC instead of 230 VAC that we have today). The reason that its apparent power seemed to be larger because of higher secondary voltage and this was fine with electromagnetic direction relays , electronic "preselection" relays and early decoders (c80)
- all this would be fine EXCEPT that many decoders used by Märklin had a limit of 40 V ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM RATING, meaning that a 25VAC impulse could detroy a decoder

One last point is to check the power cord and ANY sign of aging should call for its replacement.
Safety regulation have changed and 2 pole connection requires now a plastic casing otherwise a metal casing calls for grounding.

Here is the inside of a Märklin transformer with metal casing and two pole wire

It is extremely well made and tested at 5000 V for proper insulation

Cheers
Jean

It is correct that many decoders have a specified maximum voltage of 40 V.
But it takes 28.28 V pure sine-wave AC to reach the limit of 40 V peak voltage.

The nominal reversing voltage of blue transformers is 23 V or 24 V, but some give 31 V or more when running on 230 V mains voltage.

The nominal reversing voltage is 24 V for grey 6647 transformers, but you can expect to see around 26 V when no consumers are connected to the transformer. That is still below the 28.28 V limit of modern decoders.

Regards
Tom
