Hello, I recently acquired this Marklin z “fun starter set” but I can’t really find any information on this product itself. I know 81520 is the general item number for the small starter sets, but I can’t find anything about 81520.000.
My guess is it was just a promotional item for Mercedes of some sort?

Any info on the product would be appreciated.

Thanks

I guess it is a promotional version of the base 81520 set (for which there was an add-on set 81950). I take it there is just a Br89 and a single Mercedes labelled boxcar in your set.

Correct, that’s exactly what’s in the box.

Hello hope all is well

According to Z-Freunde-International, this is a special advertising set (werbemodelle)from 2002. While this is common today, it was unique at that time when each side of the refrigerator wagon had a different image. It is interesting the package has the mark (81520-000) you mentioned while Z-Freunde-International indicates the number as 81520-016. Looks complete.

Z scale train sets such as this are of special interest to collectors because they appeal to z collectors and Mercedes owners too.

There is no indication of the quantity of these sets, but similar sets have as few as 100. Since this set does not indicate the quantity, I would assume it was probably produced in a quantity of 3000 worldwide The set was likely available at the dealership at the time. Now you rarely see it in the secondary market and it should command a higher price but I cannot estimate a value.

A nice and fun find. That Br 89 should have a five pole motor for smooth operation I hope it works. Is it marked 89 2002? If it is, it likely belongs to this set. Sweet! I hope you got a bargain.

Take good care.

Awesome. Thank you for all the info! I swear I couldn’t find any info on this set anywhere.
Yes, the loco has marked 2002. And I think I got a fair deal in my opinion, $100 usd all in. Pretty good for a new set. It looks as if this set has never been put together. Now just need to test the loco.

Hello, hope all is well.

Please remember, this set is over twenty years old and from what you described, it was hardly used.

It is not uncommon for the oil in the locomotive to harden (Hardened Oil Syndrome)and may lockup the drive wheels. Be careful about apply power in one direction for an extended period if it is locked up or you might end up with a burned out motor.

You might consider giving the locomotive a cleanup before attempting to run it.

This locomotive is not easy to work on if the motor needs replacement. It is not a self-contained motor and replacement involved removing the armature from between the frame itself. You may search these forums for tips on cleaning and maintenance of Z scale locomotives.

Here is a link to a do it yourself site which may help.

Take good care. Best wishes.
