Hello all, I am fairly new to the hobby, so far I have been experimenting with a Z scale layout with some nice results. I got into N scale as well and I’m trying to expand my starter set layout. I wanted to control some turnout motors (minitrix 14934) via a contact track with a magnet switch (minitrix 14980). I tried connecting them any which way but I just can’t make it work (i can activate the switch with a magnet but nothing else). I have an m84 (i use to switch some signals via another contact track) and an m83 decoder (which i use to “manually” control the turnouts). Can you help me connect the contact rail to the turnout motors either in conjunction with the m83/m84 or bypassing it? I only have a mobile station and not a central station so I can’t do much programming.
Thank you!

Hello Daletbet (a first name would be so much better)
A warm welcome to this great forum.
Here a Märklinist from Paris France.
So your contact track works when approching a magnet.
Fixing a magnet under one of your wagons or locos you can easily make it work too. Of courser nothing will happen in absence of a magnet on a moving vehicle.

Now, what to do with it?
- you may directly connect the 2 wires to drive a switch (or a signal) like per this schematics. In this example a train using the deviated section will change the switch position.

- the other possible use is to use an S88 connected to your Central Station to start a "event" (a sequence of commands) automatically: switch change, signal change, starting a loco, stopping another.

Cheers
Jean

Amazing, merci Jean! It worked straight away when I connected it per your schematic. Instead of the analog switch I have an m83 and it works perfectly with the contact rail:) i am planning to expand this with a CC-Schnitte and s88 because I don’t have a central station and it’s quite expensive:)

I have the same question about the contact tracks and an M84. I'd like to have a turnout automatically switch with my contact tracks and an m84 but the posted diagram doesn't make sense to. I have all minitrix switches, track, etc.

JMG,
An M84 makes sense only to stop trains etc but not to drive turnouts.
You need an M83 to drive turnout. The M84 can be driven manually by a CS3 or MS2 and automatically using a CS3 and a S88 system to scan the contacts and trigger an event
You may also drive the turnout the analogue way: blue cables of the switch are connected directly to the contact track while the yellow wire is connected to a separate 16 VAC power supply with the other side being connected to the tracls ground (O signal) This works in full analogue way or in digital traction mode

Cheers

Hello, thanks for the answer. I have two M83s that I am using to control my turnouts with the MS2( I do not have a central station). I would like to have the M84 automatically control turnouts. I may also use it to stop trains in a block. But at the moment I can't get the m84 to control anything. I can get it connected and addressed but if I run trains across the contact tracks the only thing that happens is the leds on the M84 switch from red to green. Again, I'm using n gauge, all minitrix

Hi JMG

Sorry I forgot you were in Minitrix

You can control the M83 and M84 from you MS2 (of course you know it)

The M84 can stop trains (stop section). It can also control turnouts ONLY IF their motors have an end switch (otherwise it will burn). It is NOT their native use
To that end, use an external 16 V power supply, connect one end to the middle wire of the motor and the other to the middle (inverter) contact on the M84.
Last connect the other two motor wires to the red and green outputs on the M84.

To make an automation (have the trains operate signals and switches)
- you may use a CS3 with S88 current sensing devices to drive anything you want through "EVENTS" you create on the CS3
- you may use contact tracks like the 14980 minitrix rail (with reed contact that supports 1A. You must install a magnet on the train (AVOID installing the magnet near the motior as it distorts the magnetic field and may cause the motor to fry. Simply connect the 2 wires to the M83 that drives the turnout motor: one on the middle point and the other on the red or green ouput on the M83.

NOTE: in absence of digital sensors (S88 system) and a digital intelligence (CS3) you cannot drive other devices but a separate contact rail can drive turnouts or signal

Cheers
Jean
