Hi. I am getting to the point where I will shortly be starting to lay track on my new layout. I'm using the Marklin C track.

Once I have crimped the wire to the flat sleeve connector, I am wondering if it is worth running a small amount of solder over the joint, before I connect the cable to the track?

Members thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

I don't think there's a need because it's an area that isn't exposed to dust and won't be constantly moving to cause the wire
to fall out of the connector?

If you are not going to make any changes to the layout it is one way of ensuring a good connection.

If I know the wiring won't be changing I always do that. I don't know if it is absolutely necessary but it is easy to do and I agree that it ensures a good connection.

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

Yes I definitely would do that. I’m in the middle of doing that since I had the ground slip off during running trains on 1 connector and had a short. Always felt they are a little loose and tried to squeeze them to have tighter connection but it still came loose. But that is just my opinion. Happy Model Railroading

Just be careful that you don't melt any insulator on the wire.
You often need a lot of heat on the spade connectors to get them hot enough to melt the solder (and you need to do that to avoid a 'cold joint' - no pun intended) and that head can flow into places where you don't want it.

Not required on the crimped joint if it has been crimped properly. Soldering the connector to the track shouldn’t be required in as a proper spade connector should be tight fitting, however if it is loose fitting then a little solder may help. But caution the level of heat you put in, plastic track is not forgiving.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. It seems users are divided. I might try and see how difficult it is, but agree if the cable is crimped properly then it shouldn't come loose.

Just to be clear, I don't recommend soldering the connector to the track, just to the wire. Soldering the connector to the track would be a very bad idea in my opinion.

Hi, No I wasn't intending to solder to the track. I was going to crimp the wire on the spade connector, then add a touch of solder and then push the spade connector onto the track .

I have done some tests and am happy that I wont need to solder and that the crimper I have is doing a good job!

Thanks again to all who took the time to comment - much appreciated

Alex
