Hello everyone

I have loads of Marklin 8950 light units in my z gauge layout, which are located in buildings, features, stations etc.

I would like to replace these with push in LED units, but can’t find anywhere to obtain them?

I need at least 60 units, so any help any of you can give would be very much appreciated.

Hello, hope all is well.

Although such lights would be a welcome solution to the conversion you are wanting, it is sad such a direct replacement is not currently available. At least I have not seen them announced for light structures.

It would seem that LED light modules which are produced for direct replacement for a locomotive would also plug into your light socket. High-tech Modelbau sells various light modules, perhaps one would fit the socket. I can’t say it would work as I have not tried this. It certainly seems such a solution might be possible. This might be an expensive solution if it works.

You are no doubt aware of the LED light circuits which are already available. It would be rather easy to convert to these, because you already have the two source wires needed. Conversion to these would take a huge effort.

Perhaps a producer or someone has seen this and is working on a product. Previously we had cheaper LED providers right there in the UK. They no longer sell these. This is unfortunate, but perhaps support for our hobby has started to turn around and return. I just don’t recall seeing anything on this recently.

This website sells many LED components and modules:

I also located some very well made mini pre-made LED light products, right on Amazon. These are well made small light products I from Viessmann, which were offered at a reasonably price. Search Amazon using Viessmann 3560 or 3562. It indicates $18.00 for two but when I received them there were 5 or 6 individual lights in the package. It is possible you could just connect these to your electrical lines. I found them easy to implement This might work until something better comes along. Here is a link:

An Amazon search from your location might generate a different link. This one looks very long and unusual.

Of course shipping and tariffs are something to be aware of.

Hope this helps. Maybe someone here on the forum can suggest further solutions I am not currently aware of. Take good care.

This is REALLY helpful!!! Thank you for taking the time to assist me, in what up till now has been a rather fruitless search. I will seriously consider replacing the Marklin 8950 units, although it will be expensive... I need 97 at the current time...

Are you looking to replace the entire housng or just the bulb itself? I think it would be reltively easy to convert them to LED, although I am not familiar with the fitting so I'm not 100% sure of what would be involved. Could you maybe remove the bulb and take a photo of it agains something for scale. I may be able to suggest something then. (I would expect your total outlay to be less than £20 for the parts - plus a few evenings soldering the things together.

Whereabouts are you in Suffolk?

Cheers

Thanks Chris.

I appreciate any good advice that anyone can give. I’ve counted the units and I think I’m closer to needing 100.

I’d like to try and find an LED push in unit that will fit the existing Marklin 8950 unit.

The reason for this, is that all the Marklin z gauge buildings have round holes in their bases that the 8950 fits in to, which keeps the lights in place.

If this is not going to be possible, then I’m happy to look at ways to rewire the round light holders to work with LED units, even if we have to adapt the holder to take the LED units?

Will take some pictures of the light units and the bulbs, with something to effectively scale them. Will post later.

I live near Ipswich in Suffolk.

Hello, hope all is well.

The Marklin 8950 is just a light socket which uses the 8953 bulb which is inserted. This is the same bulb which is inserted into a locomotive.

Here is a picture of this.

Would be nice if there was a simple solution. I have a few of these and some of my converted LED lights have begun to fail. I thought LEDs lasted forever.

Take good care
