I recently received a beautiful BR 01 but though the decoder works there is no sound. The speaker is easily accessible as are the electrical contacts. A multimeter registered no resistance. Should there be? I have a variable power source, what should the level of voltage be and dc or ac?

Hi
The 39017 is a Märklin digital sound loco (BR01) built in 2011 probably fitted with an mSD decoder (released in 2011)
The loud speaker is probably in the range of 5 Ohms (to be measured with a multimeter
Spare LS reference is E180 731 and costs 18€
Cheers
Jean

I found more locomotives in my possession that have the same speaker and are easily accessible. I plan to open one up soon and confirm that there should be resistance across the contacts. If there is I can probably replace the defective speaker easily. Thanks. Any idea of the voltage?

Yes you should measure either around 8ohm or 100ohm depending on the age of the loco. Like Jean says, with mSd, it is likely a 8ohm speaker. (as said you will measure a little less because the impedance is indicated, not the resistance)

Probably the value is written on the back when getting it out of the holder. If you get the size right you can use any speaker with the correct impedance. The voltage is usually not specified, but the output power is. I.think something in the range of 1W or higher will do. (how LOUD does it need to be?)

Replacement speakers on eg amazon are a lot cheaper than the official spare parts, usually just a few euros or less, and maybe easier to source?
