How many digital decoders for C Track can you use?

Hello,
I’m quite sure I will not be using C track but………..
Does anyone know what the capacity is for using the 74462 digital decoder C track on a larger layout?
I realize that there will be a power drain on the power supply but what is a reasonable amount before you use the K83’s?
Regards

The decoder is for turnouts Using my CS3 I dont see how there is a limit to the number on the layout. They change one at a time so dont see how there is a drain on the power supply. I maybe dont understand the question.

Hi! Originally Posted by: michelvr Does anyone know what the capacity is for using the 74462 digital decoder C track on a larger layout? The power consumption of a single inactive decoder should be 0.02 A or less. The CS3 has 3 or 5 A output. With 100 decoders you will probably be somewhere between 1 A and 2 A and there is still power left. And if you have a track plan with 100 turnouts, you should prepare the layout for booster sections anyway. |

Thanks David & HO,
I have decided to renew my layout, possibly using K track and this decoder. The main reason being is by eliminating the wires under the layout.

I am not sure as I dont have K track but the decoder and motor are made to clip in to C track. Somebody with K track could maybe help and confirm no wiring is needed. |

Dave, you are right, these decoders aren't designed for K track. They plug directly into the C-track switch motors. To hook the to K track the plug connectors for power and motor will have to be clipped off. I think it is easier to use the K/M83 solution.

Doesn't K track accept most any type/brand of solenoid actuator? Then you can use either Marklin M-84, or Viessman decoders.

18 M83 type decoders, 60382 is the current model, would be needed for 70 motors. They each control 4 switch motors. That comes out to around $1260. If you bought the individual decoders @ $44 it would cost $3080! Prices are approximate retail. You could probably get a bulk price break.
Viessmann makes an older basic style M83 which is quite a bit cheaper.

Lots of wiring too. Even if you mount the decoders under the layout centrally as possible plugged to each other.
