Problems with märklin delta locomotive going to fast

Hello! I have a märklin 37159 locomotive that is running at full speed as soon as I put it on the track. I am using a MS2. I assume this has to do with the fact that it is a delta locomotive and that I have to adjust the dip switches that are inside of the tender. That being said I have a bit of a hard time opening the tender. To open the tender you need to loosen 1 screw that are in each of the bogies on the tender. One of the bogies has the pickup and I am having trouble to loosen that screw. This is because the pickup does not have a "hole" in it that makes it easy to remove to screw that is behind it. The instructions give very vague guidlines on how you are supposed to remove the pickup, which I assume that I have to do to loosen the screw. Could adjusting the dip switches fix my issue and does anyone know how to properly open up the tender? Many thanks

Hmm, that's odd. Usually, the tender separates from it's frame by prying from the bottom body sides if it's plastic. Or the coal load lifts off to acess the decoder. Does the pickup shoe pry off? Some do, and just clip back on.

Here are some pictures of the pickup on the tender and the instructions showing how to open the tender. Edited by user 10 April 2025 23:12:07(UTC)

Dear Evergreen -
If you look at the upturned toe of the slider, note how the leaf spring attaches. There will be a piece of the slider that turns back and holds to the leaf. Put in a small screwdriver and pry till you can slide off the slider to one side. Use a small pliers to bend it back when replacing.
Be careful not to bend the flat part of the shoe.

Osoraku Thank you for the answer! I am still a bit unsure where I am suppose to put the screwdriver. Where is the ”upturned toe of the slider”?

Both ends of the slider are "upturned" but the decoder is in the tender. There is a round hole in the center of the tender. The screw should be in there. Once you remove it the top of the tender should lift off revealing the decoder. Do you not have the manual? There should be instructions in it to access the decoder and how to set it.

Dear Evergreen - The toes of the slider are the upturned ends where the leaf spring presses the slider against the centre rail. When you detach the slider from the spring, you can swing the slider aside to access the screw underneath. Osoraku

Your initial post failed to identify whether this was a recent development or if you just received the loco. Had you previously operated the loco with your MS2? It is not likely that a decoder would suddenly change to analog unless it failed.

It is not likely that a decoder would suddenly change to analog unless it failed. I bought the locomotive used. I believe that the previous owner did use it on analog. I have also just recently tried it on analog and it works perfectly fine on it.

I did not know that you could remove the part of the slider that is touching the rails from the leaf spring. So I need to bend the metal part upwards to remove the slider?

The bending part seems quite tricky... The instructions show this image of the entire slider being removed but gives no instructions on how you are supposed to do it. Does anyone know how to remove the entire slider? I am a total novice when it comes to this stuff, as is probably obvious.

Just pry the whole base plate out. The red plastic insert pops out with the slider attached. The frame that goes around the wheels (bogie) stays attached to the tender until the screw is removed. Just the center piece where the slider attaches pops out.

You should not need to get inside the engine just the tender. The manual should tell you how to set the decoder to get it out of analog and what switches to change for whatever address you want to set.

The manual states the following . The locomotive was set to the address for "conventional operation". I added the locomotive to my MS2 from the database. When running it on the "conventional operations" settings it started going on max speed immediately. I have now tried the operation with delta and digital settings and it wont move at all. Which settings should I use or is it something wrong with the locomotive?

I think "conventional operation" means analog. Whatever setting you use with the dip switches and are there four or eight? You need to set as an address for the loco in the MS2. You also need to ensure that the address is not being used by any other loco on the layout at the same time as this one. I always slide all the switches on and off a number of times to eliminate any corrosion which might prevent their operation.

I'm no expert but looking at the photo of the slider and screwdriver and looking at the photo of the page on how to replace the slider I see that the current slider is different. I have no idea on how to pry it off, but this is odd.
1) figure a way to remove slider assembly. Work in progress 2) open tender 3) look at dip switches and do as suggested, move them all up and down a few times and try again with all of them off 4) set address 78 5) assign this address to loco on MS and try again placing it on track
Good luck

I didn't know there was some 37xxx models with delta decoders. Good luck with your nice locomotive ! Best Regards Joël |

I have tried doing different decoder settings (dip switch configurations) and I cant seem to get the locomotive the work on digital... I assume that there is a problem with the decoder. Nevertheless, I must thank all of you for the help!

As far as I could tell, this is a digital locomotive with a 6090 decoder. Inside the tender, it should have a decoder with a 8 dip switch assembly that will allow you to select one address between 00 and 80. https://www.pallund.dk/marklin/6090x/6090_up.jpg S1 = Dip Switch Panel Looking at the underside, I don't see the modern slider with plate. I see an older version that is clipped into the red base where four metal tongues are bent into the red base. As you stated, there is no hole in the slider, making it more complex to insert a screwdriver into the screw beneath it. To do this, gently tilt the slider either to the right or the left and use a thin jeweler's screwdriver to unscrew the screw. Do not use a large screwdriver or force the slider too much. Sorry for the late respons! To clarify, I did manage to open the tender and I did try different decoder settings (different dip switch configurations). But I still did not manage to make it work.

Can you please open the tender again & send us a picture of what decoder is in there please. I believe it to look like this: \[img] [/img] |

Sorry, I have been busy these days and I did not expect this post to get more replies! I kind of gave up on this locomotive and sold it since I was not able to make it work on digital. The decoder looked like the one in this video:

Well in hindsight you probably did the right thing selling it. There is no place for a Delta decoder being in a beautiful digital loco like Marklin #37159. |

I bought it used so I don't know what the previous owner did with it. I am not confident with soldering so changing the decoder was not really an option for me. I just hoped that I could get it to work by adjusting the dip switches, which I could not.
