we have just received the REE HO scale "sausage" coaches, model pack is item VB475. These are SNCF coaches with distinctive round windows.

These are 2 rail units with internal lighting. We want to change the wiring so that the lights will work on 3 rail Marklin, but we can not figure out how to open the coach body.
There are no visible parting lines anywhere on the body, no screws underneath that might release the body, nothing even remotely obvious as to how to do it. And of course no instructions, and no reply from REE about how to do it.

Does anybody know how to do it ?
regards
Norm in Oz.

I found this on YouTube:

I guess that you would have to leave one contact to the axle/wheel and wire the other one to current conducting couplers and mount the slider on one of the coaches or take power from the locomotive.
If you put a decoder in one of the cars, you would need to run two pole current conducting couplers for both live and return.

Do you plan to change the axles and install a slider?

You might get around adapting everything in the bottom of the cars; If they already have lighting, the wheels must then already be connected, so maybe it is possible to extend some of the wires to the couplers, and bridge the wheel-contacts (if you arent already changing to AC wheels)
Of course this would leave the wiring visible from the bottom of the waggons, should they fall off the track, roll over and expose themselves to the spectator... ;-)

You do not need to change the wheels. Their only necessary if you use contact tracks and can be made conductive by other means such as conductive liquid or a wire to uninsulate the wheel.

while as has been said one might be able to make some sort of flimsy reconnection underneath, this does not answer the basic question, namely how to open the coaches.

Because as soon as one activates internal lighting, it becomes obvious that there are no occupants. No point in running a passenger train if there are no passengers for the ride. So one still needs to open the coaches to install the Preiserlings.

Other than the two pages I posted, were there any other instructions that came with the models?

I decided to search using French terms. Perhaps this will help:

Thank you Mike that is exactly what we needed !!!!!

There were NO instructions at all with the coaches. And our search in English did not reveal the "how to turn on the lights" that you sent earlier, and since we had no instructions, did not know about that .

thanks again !

Norm.

Hello Norm/Mike /All,

My friend Oliver's Ree VB-475 coach set how to get the car apart photos.

The first problem to tackle is to remove the buffers and this isn't as easy as the video shows.
There isn't much space for people who might have sausage fingers to be able to grip the buffers with ease, I found that if I used a small flat blade screw driver and pushed the buffer from behind to budge it just a small amount then try using the fingers for final removal. This isn't for the faint hearted to attempt getting the car apart.

The photo above shows the body shell removed which allows you to see the partline shape. You have to squeeze the body shell on both sides starting at the first round window and rock sided to side then select the next window and repeat. You will notice the partline starting to come apart. Dont squeeze close to the ends of the car as it is very rigid.
This process requires firm squeezing at the location of the rectangular holes on the mounting tabs. I wasn't in my comfort zone doing this procedure.

Close up of the body shell showing curtains, very nice.

The aim is to convert the coaches from 2-rail to 3-rail to be able to run on a Marklin digital layout. While the coaches are being modified to have single pole electrical couplers added to be powered from the locomotive, passengers will also be added at the same time to try and avoid opening the coaches multipule times.

More to follow on this topic when time permits.
