Hello Are there anyone else on this forum who have been just as stupid as me and bought the 55990 Big Boy from Märklin? I love the real Big Boy, and the H0 scale Big Boys from Märklin are great. So I decided to get the 1:32 model in spite of the Big Boy price tag. On the right side, there is a moving part. I think it's called the reverser. It moves one direction when the locomotive starts going forward, and the opposite way when backing up. Sometimes it catches on something and makes a jerk and a click-sound. Most of the time it works smoothly and without a sound. I'm curious if anyone else who has the model has experienced the same? A picture to help you understand which part I am referring to:

Hello,
I think it is a reason to report the issue to the dealer that sold you Big Boy and ask how to solve the issue. If they don't solve it, then you report it to Märklin. I have a friend that has some Gauge 1 items and Märklin directly helped him solves one issue in friendly manner and without any problems. I got the feeling that Märklin has a special care of their Gauge 1 customers.

Sorry no help. Just curious. The real thing has two independent engines. In low speed they are not necessarily synchronized. Are there two motors in the Marklin Gauge 1. If so, does the chuff-sound follow each engine or does it always sound like a locomotive with one engine? To me, the sound of the engines going in and out of sync is very special. |

@ mbarreto - dealer offers no help. I have contacted Märklin who replied that "perhaps some oil would help". Which I tried without any luck. My hope is that it "wears in" and stops by itself.
@ blid - the model is so big, and my livingroom so small, that I have only tried running the locomotive on a piece of track about 4-5 meters. In relatively slow speed. To me it seems the disired sound of steam release ("chuff-chuff") does not model the sound of the prototype correctly. The sound is loud (!) and impressive, but so far I have not heard that it goes in and out of sync. I hope to make a longer track outside in the summer.

Thank you for your answer. I have watched a couple of more short videos and heard one saying that it has two motors. But so far just the sound of one steam engine. I have the MTH 1:32 version from 2006. It has the sound and smoke from the two independent engines. As I recall the MTH H0 version has it too. I hope that the reverser is just something that will disappear after some use. My Big Boy don’t have that feature. |

@kiwiAlan - the dealer in Stockholm has told me to do my MRR-shopping elsewhere, after I bought models for €20-30,000 in his shop over the last 4-5 years. I intend to follow his advise.

[edit] While you are at it, maybe give your local version of Trading Standards, or whatever you call the local agency, a call about what your rights are. I'm sure that with the single item value of this loco they will jump on the case and maybe get you at least some money back for having to go direct to Marklin to deal with the warranty case. [/edit]
