I bought a used digital locomotive because I was told it would run on analog (and the original analog version now is a very pricey collector's item). It didn't. But a diligent search found an old post that gave a clue. Popping the top off revealed a DIP switch box with 8 switches. Switches 6 and 8 were On, and I turned them Off. The locomotive seems to be running just fine, now. I would like to find additional information about the switches, in case there are any that could/should be turned On.

I'm attaching a photo of the DIP switch box. The image includes a more clearly labeled larger version of it so it is clearer.

The base layout was bought in Germany in 1956, so finding parts is fun.

Thank you for any help.

Cheers,
Richard

Hello Richard,
Those older decoders didn't automatically recognise analogue operation. Instead they required all the switches to be turned off in order for them to be set in analogue mode.
Now that you've got them all turned off you're good to go.

Later decoders would automatically recognise analogue mode so the position of the switches was irrelevent but the earlier ones, as you have found out, had to all be set to 'off'.
I had a Delta BR41 that was the same.

Enjoy the loco and good luck with finding all the bits for your layout.

Cheers, Paul
Marklin HO using M track. Now reverted to analogue as I find it has more character and is more fun...... and I understand it!

Actually, very early locos had automatic detection.
Then came a time without automatic detection in order to save patent fees.
Then automatic detection came back.

Tom

Paul,

Many thanks for the information. I'll now leave the DIP switches alone and screw the loco back together. It definitely runs better than my 1956-era steam locos, even after they had been reconditioned.

And to all, thank you for the interesting updates.

Cheers,
Richard
