Assuming the loco is a traditional analogue one then check the wires from the reverser to the field magnet. There are two wires, one for each direction. A couple of times I have had a loco stop running in one direction and both times it has been one of these wires either broken or detached. This is especially likely if the loco is a bogie one such as a diesel or electric since the wires are flexed as the motor bogie moves. Moreso if the wires are a bit short or not routed in a way that allows them to move freely.
If it is a digital loco then I'll leave it to somebody else to advise as I gave up on digital a long while ago. Good luck Greg.

Marklin HO using M track. Now reverted to analogue as I find it has more character and is more fun...... and I understand it! |

Hi Greg,
Try resetting the decoder, that may fix it (long shot) otherwise I would suspect a faulty decoder.
Cheers….

It has a mfx+ decoder so if you have a CS controller, not sure about the MS, you can do a factory reset. You can also check the decoder and confirm that it has the proper cv for reverse.

A tip...check if there is contact between motor and the PCP by pull off mfx decoder and use multimeter to see if there is contact. |

Thanks everyone for your thoughts.
I had a friend over who ran a few tests using the ESU Lokprogrammer and decoder tester and concluded that it was the decoder causing the problem. Everything else works and to replace the decoder is about A$150 which is too expensive just to have the loco go in reverse. So, I will have a loco that can only go forward which is all I really need.
