Some advice please on setting up the 7651 crane. I know that it will not work with the Mobile system , as only the light function and magnet work. The manual states that it will only work through a Central Unit/ Central Control Unit with the Control 80f as the crane controller.

I will buy the old Central Units just to run the crane but need advice on how much of the old system is required.

The manual shows a transformer, a central unit and the 80f but the 80f appears only to be an add-on. I would prefer to buy a transformer and either a 6029 or a 6021,both of which seem to have the necessary function buttons without the need for the 6020 central unit. The transformer, central unit and 6029 are available on eBay . I am not sure how the components are connected, hopefully by the usual Marklin black/red/yellow/grey connectors at the back of the controls. I presume that the multi pin sockets on the side are only for connecting boosters, which I do not need

Grateful for your thoughts.

John

Yes, a transformer and 6021 would work. Although I must ask why it won’t work with a mobile station?

Many thanks for the swift and helpful reply. I do not know why it will not work with the mobile station, but the manual says that it will only work with a specific system. I have also emailed my supplier, Keesmarklin in the Netherlands for his view.

I will look at the link.

The decoder uses an odd flavor of the Motorola protocol that is not supported anymore afaik on most recent controllers. I have a 7051 that was converted to digital using the same decoder as your crane (7652). My ecos(1) supports a specific protocol for it, 'motorola fx 14'.
The same protocol is also used on the old panoramacar 4999 with the moving waiter.
Maybe someone with a more recent controller like CS3 or MS2 can say whether it supports this legacy protocol and what settings need to be set? In any case I would not spend money on old controllers like a 6021. An ecos1/2 will definitely support it.
I do recall you need to set a certain DIP setting on the 6021 for it to output the required protocol, should you still want to go with a 6021 and your original decoder.

Oh yes, I would like to add, the mosfet driver for the crane magnet on the decoder is rather weak and sensitive, it already went up in smoke once here... But I was able to repair it by replacing the component, I still have a stash of replacement fets (that are now long obsolete and difficult to get). So be carefull with it! (dont energize the magnet for too long)

Hi John,

The transformer 6002 has the brown and yellow connectors which are wired to the corresponding brown and yellow on the control unit 6021. The 6021 has the red and brown connectors usually used to supply power to the track.

The 6021 has the plug in facility on both sides. Connection to the right is for control 80 and or 80f. Connection to the left is to the 6040 keyboard for points and signals.

John, I have a boxed 6021 here. I am helping another Marklin fan dismantle his layout because he can no longer use it through illness. Would £18.00 plus postage work for you?

Kind regards
Adrian

I don't own a stationary crane, but a first issue Goliath. Wanting a magnet, I ordered the one for the tower cranes. I connected the wires to a toggle switch and my 32va blue transformer.

John,

There have been a number of discussions over the years on the older 7051 model crane and the decoder kit 7652 and some on the 7651 crane as well.

There are options to use the crane as intended using the older decoder (which has issues as mentioned here) or you can upgrade the crane in a similar manner to upgrading the 7051 or you could consider attaching a joystick for control.

If you are interested in reading about these subjects and getting some good tips, do a search (using button in top right) and search on 7051, 7652 and 7651 and you will see some useful topis (some with wiring diagrams) that may help you to decide how to proceed.

Best Regards

Glenn

Don't look back, your not heading that way.

Hi Glenn/All,

I upgraded my 7651 to overome the reverse bit which is missing from the original decoder. With computer control you need to rely on the decoder to know which direction has been set at all times.

Here is my upgrade article 7651 LP5 Upgrade

7651 Crane manual here:- Marklin 7651 Digital Crane new.pdf (1,217kb) downloaded 88 time(s).

You should be able to substitute the 6021 for the 6020 / 6035.

Here's some info on how to control a 7051 crane with a 6021. Other controllers should work also. I say this because you might be able to remove the decoder board from your crane and use it as a 7051 analog crane.
The picture also shows the 7651 crane being used with a 6021.

Many thanks to those of you , who offered advice on my difficulties with the crane operation. I sought advice from Marklin and their solution below works after some more lubrication and checking the seating of the brushes. It would not work on the earlier grey MS and I changed the address back to the factory setting of 30, as advised:

Dear Mr. Kelly,

the crane can be operated with any item producing a MM track signal. Please give your MS2 a try.

I think, address 80 is not the best choice as it is the last address. Please use the default address 30.

You only need F0, F1, F2 and the speed knob to control the crane. Please follow the advices in the manual.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Hi
There is an interesting video on the 7051 crane how to repair and how to digitalize.

Cheers

Last week. I wrote that the analog steering of the crane is the best way, because only then you are able to turn and lift at the same time.

I also commented on the TEE classic that a BR 218 or a Nohab would a good engine to pull the the coaches of the former Northlander.

Very strange to find out that both posts have disappeared.

We had some website ssues yesterday and I wondered if Juhan had restored the forum database to a previous point in time. However my last post before the forum went down is still there so maybe not.

I don't have any other theories as to why they are missing.

The database has been restored to 2024-08-11 05:00 (Local Swedish time), so any posts made after that time will be lost.

It is what it is, we are fortunate the issues weren't any worse than what they were.
