Can anyone tell for exampl
how many millimeter low or high
clearande is?

Unfortunately I can't help you with your question but I'm using reflective opto couplers, which fit between sleepers (especially suitable for K-track) and the opto coupler is activated by the slider or pick up shoe, the set up is to create a circuit board and the moment that is done its a save and reliable detection method and speed hasn't got an issue with., the height of the opto coupler can also be increased by adding more 4 pin sockets to it, I've used it all over my layout (13m x 5m) never had a failure, you could activate signals (switching from red to green), turnouts, station platform lights etc. etc.

Hi Mille
Usually low clearance is for small locos
High clerance is for wagons and larger locos where more space and possible locations.
One personal advice: don't install a magnet near the motor as it changes the magnetic field and also can demagnetize some cheap motors (happened to me.
I expect the working distance between magnet and Reed to be a few mm (3 to five) To be checked with your magnets before installation.

As you know:
- a strong magnet allows more possibilities (so any magnet will do)
- on some positions, the contact will close TWICE

I found very strong and compact magnets in the faller car system or on the Internet (cylinders of 2.5 mm diameter with 2.5 thickness.)
Alternately, you may select those
Noedym magnets
Cheers
Jean

The bottoms of most locos is closer to the track than other cars so it is harder to locate the magnet where it will not cause shorts. One advantage of reed switches is they allow operations that are specific to the car they are on. But that is also the disadvantage. One example is placing magnets on local passenger trains but not on express trains. That would make it possible to divert the locals into stations while the express passes them by.

Brawa have reed contact that seems work together with Märklins L88.
Not sure if this work nice with Märklins magnet.
