IMG_1807.jpgIMG_1803.jpgIMG_1806.jpgIMG_1805.jpgIMG_1801.jpgIMG_1802.jpg Hello! I recently inherited a Marklin CCS 800 from my father, who had been gifted it from his father as a young boy (but forbidden from even touching it!) I'm hoping to learn a little bit more about the model I have in my possession, particularly its year of make. My father was born in 1954, and I wonder if this was something that was "gifted" in celebration of his birth. Or if this model was produced earlier / later - I'm just curious to understand the timelines and what I've been passed on by my father really! Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Sarah
A warm welcome to this great forum. Here a Märklin HO fan from France near Paris (Ile de France)
Here is what we have
- box is "Rautenkarton" (grey cardboard with dark red lozanges and Märklin "bicycle" from approx 1951 until 1960 but this may not be the original box
- loco is marked CCS800 from 1947 until 1959 (when it was marked 3015 instead). Very solid indication (of course the body could have been changed)
- the pantographs are type 6 (all nickeled 1953-1975) contrary to type 5, larger ones with copper pick-up shoe (1950-1954) and "Wattchen" (Trolley type) between 1947 and 1950. Could have been changed
- large sanding boxes (from 1950 onwards)
- round protection on headlights (Rounde Lampenbügeln) 1951 and later) Not easy to change but possible
- ski sliders with large holes (could have been changed) indicating 1952 until 1959 before there were Mushroom pickup, spoon pickups and articulated pick-ups
- The loco seems to have traction tires (picture unclear): none until 1951, transparent ones 1952 until 1961, black rubber after 1965. Of course transparent may have been replaced with rubber ones
- I can't see the headlights (internal mounting 1947 to 1951 of lamps or external after 1951), most probably external
- colour is "dunkelgrün" so outside the 1948 to 1955 period when it was "Olivegrün"

So my best guess would be around 1955 but, of course I can be wrong.
Cheers
Jean

Did they put serial numbers on the frames in the 1950s Jean?

No Märklin did not add serial numbers until late 80s or 90s but they were stickers

It seems the CCS800 inscription is in the color of the body, and if that is the case, than it is at least a CCS800.8 from 1956.
If it also has traction tires, then, from what I understand is a CCS800.9 which can be from 1957 to 1959.
I don't understand well from the photos what he color of the CCS800 inscription is and if it has tires.
I think tires started in 1957 for the CCS800, but not sure.

Miguel

Best regards,
Miguel
Mostly Märklin H0.

Oh wow, thank you everyone for your thorough replies - I didn't expect anyone to write back, and I am so appreciative of the detailed descriptions. It's incredible that so much information can be discovered through the smallest details! I don't know much about the world of model trains, and this has given me wonderful insight into a passion of my grandfathers. Thank you all so very much! Sarah
