Hi
I’m looking for some help.
I have a Marklin 34060 EP3/6 that came without a pickup slider.
34060.jpg

From the manual and the exploded view the replacement part number is 7185.
slider.jpg

I ordered the part, but when I went to put it on it does not fit, and the slider does not make electrical contact that I can see to provide power to the Lok.
It seems like there is a piece missing on the bottom of my EP3/6
bottom.jpg
this part outlined in red, but nothing is listed on the exploded view.Confused Confused
manual red.jpg

Would someone be able to take a picture of the bottom of their M 34060 without the slider so that I can see where the problem lies.
Are there any suggestions for repair?

Thanks,
Kai

Hello Kai,

If you look at exploded diagram downloadable from Marklin Website, the part is E300101.

See https://www.maerklin.de/...lnummer=34060&lang=1

Hi Fabrice
Thanks for the link. It seems like the same exploded view that I have which came with the Lok.
I'll check the part number and see if it's the same as the on-line link. But one would expect it to be the same as in the manual (that I posted)

Cheers,
Kai

Hi Jean

The bottom of your Lok looks the same as my photo, so there's nothing missing, just that the drawing in the manual is not exact.
But it looks like your pick up slider is a bit different.
I think that the part number for the slider that they have listed is incorrect.Cursing

Thanks,
Kai

That won't be the first time. Another instance of this that I know about is the pickup shoe for the Micheline railbuses is listed with incorrect part number, at least in the early paper manuals.

Hi Kai
Like already said "it wouldn't be the first time there is an error BUT:
- The socket width of most Märklin older sliders is standard
- what is key for you is (1) the distance between the screw and one of the folded metal (to make contact with the contact shoe on the loco's base) and (2) the location of recesses to host the 2 slider "buckles" so that the slider in upper position is at least 1 mm above the rail surface and so that never there is a contact between the slider and the metal frame of the loco.

IMO the slider 7185, looks like the good one but the unit you received is outside tolerances and a little filing of the brown insulator rectangle (similar to the old pertinax) to reduce its width is all that is needed for you to mount the slider

Cheers
Jean.

Hi Jean

I'll take a look and see if the slider will fit those measurements, I also have some other ones that I can take a look at, and then see how to make some adjustments.

Thanks
Kai

I guess it's bound to happen.
Does Marklin ever try to correct the error?Confused

I believe you may need 300101 slider/shoe

Digital M (+ some K) track layout with mostly vintage rolling stock and accessories, and small Z scale layout.

I cannot see clearly that screwing the slider directly to the bottom prevents a short circuit. A possible solution could be:

1.- Checking first that the lights and/or motor work, with a direct connection of the wires from the tansformer, one to the wheel or chassis of the model and another to the central point shown in the attachment.

2.- Soldering a short wire between that central point and one of the plates of the slider shown in the attachment.

3.- Inserting a properly cut sheet of plastic or thick paper under the slider for electric isolation and screwing it then.

RegardsThese are the contact plates on the slider.jpg

Should be easy to find the contact point with an ohm meter or multi-meter. Or just a continuity tester.

Hi BenP

Yes I believe you are correct.
Seems like only 2 Loks use this slider.

Hello PacoM

Thanks for this info.
But it seems that this is the wrong slider that is listed by Marklin in the manual, and from a quick look it doesn't seem like the contact points line up when slider is screwed on.
Yes I could probably rig something up, but I shall first try to get the correct part.

Cheers,
Kai

Hi

Because I see the discussion continuing here is more info:
Appologies, indeed the slider and the flat spring are 100% standard BUT the bakelite part is fancy as you may see below

Sliders.png

On top, an old-style 7165 (the the "ears" for locating holes
on the bottom, the original slider delivered by Märklin with the 37060 / 34060 loco

Of course one solution is to order the part you have located (from Göppingen? Can your retailer have it by special order? Here In

Another solution "Bricolage" (as we say here in France) is to take a normal slider 7185 and remove the bakelite part to machine or file it to a total width of 5.5 mm.
Then you mount back the bakelite and then install the slider in the proper orientation (no fool-proof tab anymore)

Here is for reference another clearer picture of the bottom of my loco (same as yours)

37060 Bottom without slider.png

I hope you are good to go now
Cheers

Jean

Will the single contact plate that is any where near the proper location actually make contact with the loco contact plate? They both appear to be too far.

Hi
Because I am not near my layout, the only slider I could find for the picture was a 7165 (with a longer spacing between the screw and the nearest spring clip of the slider.
This is not so with a 7185 (your picture).

If you have an assortment of sliders like most Märklinists have, I am sure you can find the proper slider with a little extra work to reduce the bakelite isulator width to 5.5 mm.
The alternative is to order the proper slider referenced E300101 by Märklin costing €25.50 for 2 sliders plus shipement and possible tax. The part is available.
Cheers
Jean

one thing is not clear to me, looking at IBtrain's photo, where is the hole for the slider's screw?

On IBtrain's photo, not counting the wheels of the bogie, from the left side it is just above the right side of the second wheel. It has slightly dark coloration around it. On John-Jean's photo, which reversed the loco, it is slightly to the right of the contact pad pointed to by the red arrow.

Hello Jean
You have a good and inexpensive way to solve this issue I have.

Hopefully I'll be able to get to it this weekend.

In my photo I left the screw in place, making the hole more difficult to see.

I took some measurements of the Lok and slider.

Here you can see the spacing between the screw hole and the contact point is 3.5mm
spacing Lok.jpg

The spacing on the 7185 slider is 6.6mm, and more than 7mm on the other side.
spacing 7185.jpg

I found a slider were the spacing might work,
spacing other.jpg

However it's shorter than the original one that Jean has in his picture.
size other.jpg

So for now I'll search for the correct slider with better shipping options.

Thanks for all the help and tips,ThumpUp
