Forum member igf2 posted in 2009 a very nice compilation of his Maerklin US tinplate collection in a French forum (http://www.3rails.fr). He presents also many exotic Maerklin models, some original, some special dealer series, some customized - as a tin plate GN box car and a triple unit GN F7. Further, New Haven electric loco and caboose(s) etc.. Link: http://www.3rails.fr/for...opic.php?f=25&t=1540Make sure to scroll through all pages up to the end to miss nothing out. |

A German gent is offering repainted North American prototype locos and freight cars. Sometimes he is proceeding with a little bit of artistic license, but the samples I had had in my hands were professionally done (albeit pricey): https://m.ebay.de/sch/i....p;_mwBanner=1&_pgn=1 |

Seems as if the above email link does not work. So, the solution is to go to ebay.de and search for the vendor name: "kgk1232012" As an appetizer, a screenshot of a selection of his works: Edited by user 31 August 2017 13:57:05(UTC)

Running F7 ABBA consist(s) pulling passenger train(s), I was wondering what should be an acceptable loco to train ration in terms of aesthetics and "prototypicality". Up to now I employed an ABBA consist for eight coaches, which seems to me the right minimum ratio in terms of looks. Longer passenger trains are anyway not manageable on my curvy layout(s). Recently I found a video consisting of Otto Perry footage: There are two scenes of ATSF F7 ABBAs hauling a mix of only seven (!) heavy and light weight passenger cars: 0:35-0:49 (B/W) 0:50-1:03 (color) So, I have no scruples to reduce train length to seven coaches. :o) Screenshots: Edited by user 08 November 2018 14:41:13(UTC)

Here a nice Rio Grande example, a late (January 1970) and short California Zephyr consisting of eight coaches hauled by a F7 ABBA sandwiching a heater unit (née Alco PB) in the middle between the F7B units. Source: www.westernrailimages.comThe train could actually be modeled with M* rolling stock by combining the M* 26600 CZ set with the M* 43614 CZ extension car plus a M* 43602 ATSF sleeper car (one could pretend it was on loan). :o) |

Thanks for the nice video and images! I have the 26600 CZ and 43614 dome coach and that makes for one beautiful train. That consist would be more correct if I could add another dome coach but I am can't bring myself to add a non-CZ coach to that train and it already is one of my longest passenger consists. There are multiple motive power options for that train as well. The CZ of course uses WP EMD FP7s but a cool option would be to head it up with D&RGW PAs, which they used for their portion of that route in the early years. My trains spent over 10 years in storage and the 26600 is a major reason that I am back into Märklin again today. When I would think of that train or my Big Boy never running again I knew that I had to get a layout built or forever miss out on that joy. I lost the sound on my CZ last year and right now those locos are waiting for me to find the time to install a mSD/3 decoder, which will bring back the sound and improve the running of one of my favorite trains. |
Regards,
Jim

I think these GE AC locos are the ones being used in Australia on DRIVERLESS trains. They have been in full operation now since 2018. Maybe we will see an Australian version for iron ore like the 10,000 tonne trains we see here - West Australia driverless trainKimball |
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge. |

Does anyone have any information on using these with knuckle couplers? I have not heard about this option with Marklin rolling stock.
Things like what couplers are compatible? I also wonder what the shims do exactly?
I have some very old American Flyer trains which use knuckle couplers and they look great and work well, although they are not HO scale.

Marklin has had this option for at least the last 5 years, maybe more. Marklin provides a knuckle coupler set with the locomotive. They are reasonably easy to swap. I’ve done it a few times with no issues. Kadee makes a compatible coupler set for Marklin items that have the correct coupler pocket. I’m sometimes torn between using them on non-US rolling stock. I find Marklin traditional couplers to be annoying at times and I’m tempted to use knuckle couplers. I know it’s a sacrilege but the idea is to enjoy the hobby. The mention of shims, on this lok, is the first time I’ve heard the term. Usually, you just swap couplers, they match/align and off you go. Steve

Jimmy I have all the F units with the exception of an original UP set (too pricey) and the Coca-Cola set. I don’t know what Marklin was thinking; it’s not prototypical. I suppose if a cheap CC set popped up, I’d get it to compete the collection but they’re not something I have to have. I wish Marklin would do a Canadian Pacific passenger set with the gray/maroon paint scheme. I think it’s referred to as the maple leaf scheme. I think they wanted to but ran into some licensing issues. I’d also like to see a yellow/silver ATSF war bonnet paint scheme. Steve
