39562 SBB Brown Ce 6/8 Crocodile - drivetrain failure?

Dear Marklin users, It has been a long time since I posted on this forum, proving the quality of M* loco's Unfortunately, I now have a brown beloved crocodile that is running crippled.... It has not run very often, just the bi-monthly health runs for 10 minutes. Yesterday while running on low speed (20-30 km/u) it suddenly started to stutter, jerk while running with 2 small SBB wagons. After removing the mid-cabin, it appear that the Soft-Sinus flywheel is running OK / constantly Apperantly, the problem is somewhere with the worm-wheel, the gearbox or.... If I manally support / roll the loc to reposistion the wheels/drivetrain, it tends to run again, but with jerks when to much speed is applied the Sinus engine seems to 'slip' (and making snoring sound) and the loc stops riding. Looking at the exploded view, I would like to inspect the worm wheel and remount the Soft-Sinus engine. Not much detail on the gearing inside the wheel body...the drawing is not very detailed there, so I wonder if it can be inspected/opened. Soft-Sinus engine is also stuck/tightly mounted. Could not pull it out without excesive force (so I left it for now) Any idea's how to remove the motor safely? Any similar expierenes with drive train / worm wheel slipping (or perhaps broken cogs if this would appear plasic) Greetings, Gert-Jan (owning 110 locs - counting just 3 with defect) |

Hi Gert-Jan
Not a specialist here but with more than 10 SDS, compact sinus and sinus locos among a total of 40+ MFX sound locos and 50 more analogue ones. Good news is the motor is OK as well as the decoder drive I think. I would check this: - the wormgear attached to the motor (it happened to me almost new the wormgear on an SNCF 40108 (SDS motor) almost completely disintegrated and was replaced by Märklin - the correct position of the SDS motor (it is not locked by force) - the correct quartering of the wheels (when the motor is removed, the driving wheels must turn very freely). Usually during wheel cleaning some force on them can cause the quartering to be lost Attention: the electronic driving the SDS motor is very fragile so make sure you are protected against static electricity.
Cheers Jean

Hello Jean, I love to inspect the wormwheel, but I am curious how much 'force' is needed to pull the SDS out of the drivetrain body. Maybe I am too carefull to pull it out...or does it need a twist (counter-clock wise)? Basically, it is mounted like this: |

Hi Gert-Jan The way it is mounted calls for 2 screws to hold it. Agreed Märklin's explosion diagram does not show them but since there is no bracket to hold the motor there must be screws After checking Märklin explosion diagram for the 39562 and comparing with Modellbahnchecker, Märklin's explosion diagram seems wrong Please check this http://www.dermodellbahnchecker...9562-maerklin-inside.htmI cannot be 100% sure but I would look closely under the motorized bogie, outside the center driving wheel. There must be 2 screws. Cheers Jean |

Issue found after removing the plastic brake details at the bottom very gently. Also removing the front bogey and central contactrod (schleifer). Obviously, the metal/brass wormwheel is 'gone' to dust....looks like a case of many miles with poor lubricant. |

Hi Gert-Jan Originally Posted by: Gert-Jan Obviously, the metal/brass wormwheel is 'gone' to dust....looks like a case of many miles with poor lubrican This is exactly what happened on my SNCF 40108 ref 39401 built in 2007. The gear was destroyed in no time (loco still brand new while the other gearworm was correct. This is not a lubrication issue but a manufacturing issue. It was repaired by Märklin / Märklin dealer, free of charge. Now it is in use for 14 years no problem anymore. I believe that Märklin cannot deliver new SDS motors but probably a gear worm can be obtained. Check with your local Märklin dealer or call Märklin Service +49 (0) 7161 608 222 Monday to Friday from 13.00 till 17.00 CET Central European Timer. Better speak German but some may speak English. Exctrating the wormgear without damaging the motor may call for special tools (extractors) Another solution to get a new wormgear is to get a similar size motor (25 to 30€) with a gearworm and swap the gear.
