Reckon we have had about enough discussion and some fun in the thread. Time to leave it.
Take care I like Marklin and will defend the worlds greatest model rail manufacturer.

From Merriam-Webster:

Definition of "third rail"
1: a metal rail through which electric current is led to the motors of an electric vehicle (such as a subway car)
2: a controversial issue usually avoided by politicians

Perhaps this thread is the inspiration for #2?

Stud contact is not a rail. A rail is a rail. Märklin tracks are two rail with stud contact.

The studs are solid parts of the rail. A rail is a rail no matter if it's a rail for train wheels or a power pickup.
Generally speaking Maerklin AC is based on the three rail concept in the "real" world.

Have a good day Smile

Here it is, the elusive 3rd rail.
20220819_062118.jpg
Digital M (+ some K) track layout with mostly vintage rolling stock and accessories, and small Z scale layout.

The last word. It is acceptable to consider Märklin as a "3-rail system". End of discussion.

For those distressed that it has dragged on a bit, don't forget that we are two moderators down and the remainder are in scattered time-zones so response may not be a quick as some would like.

But, there is a (small) temptation in seeing how silly this thread could become. "There's nowt so queer as folk."
