I find the new generation pickup shoes on modern wagons too long for my M track layout, creating occasional minishorts. Newer carriages have a specific tube connection, so one cannot use older, screwbased shoes.
I found that one can switch the metal contact part by opening the 4 metal wings clips and use that part from older shoe generation with similar wing clips. Just retighten around plastic holder.
Fits and works great. See pic (shortened shoe installed; original for length comparison).
