Greetings,
I have a BR 40 from a digital starter set from the early 2000s. It has a digital decoder with the small adjustment pots for speed and acceleration and only 14 step motor control. The motor is a 5 pole motor (high efficiency I think). I'd like to replace the digital decoder bringing it up to current spec with DCC and/or Mfx. While I'm at it, I'll probably fit a new motor (the last has been used and abused).
I'd be grateful for advice on exactly what I need to buy, I guess either Marklin or ESU. In addition, what is needed if upgrading the current sound decoder as well.
I'm in desperate need of a digital primer update, as my knowledge of the current landscape is lacking.
Grateful for any pointers and advice.

It would be really nice if Marklin produced an upgrade list of decoders and motors for each of the older locomotives. Unfortunately I am not aware of one. You pretty much have to identify which loco you want to upgrade and hope someone who was successful replies.

Apologies, yes. The starter set was the Marklin 29855. The E40 doesn't have it's own catalogue number as far as I'm aware, but it is mentioned elsewhere, including here: https://www.marklin-user...in-old-29855-starter-setIt's an easy retrofit as far as I can tell. My main confusion is what current options to consider to replace the old 60902 decoder, including sound. Many thanks, Paul

The motor is already 60941, but if you need spares, you can get the 60941 motor or order individual parts (anchor, maybe motor shield also). You can install Märklin sound decoders. I'd take those with 21MTC socket. Take out the current decoder and install the decoder board that comes with the MSD/3. You can install ESU sound decoders. Or other brands. Too many options to list them all. |

Thanks Tom - much appreciated.
I only see 14 steps in iTrain locomotive speed configuration - so I assumed it was 14. Even at 27 steps, I had thought an upgrade to 127 steps might see some improvement in operaiton. The locomotive was indeed very smooth, but is quite jittery in its twilight years - despite cleaning attempts. I might start with just a motor replacement, which might get me back to 'factory' condition, as there's no reason to suspect a faulty decoder I guess.

Is the mSD the motor decoder and sound decoder all in one? It's not clear to me what the differences are - whether you still need to buy a separate sound decoder and speaker.

MSD is the Märklin Sound Decoder. Speakers are included. It also controls the motor.
MLD is the Märklin Loco Decoder. |
