47918 Tank Wagon set

The original notification I received about these wagons had a picture that seemed to be of a flag on a prototype wagon. let me see if I can retrieve the picture ...

Try this ...

Thanks for the image.
Indeed, it seems to be a real flag. The photo I showed is the link to the Märklin website photo, so probably the model has it as a painting and a real flag was used for the celebration trip.

P.S.: As I found on the other thread that the model is not so close to the prototype, I am not ordering it.
Best regards,
Miguel

I'm getting a bit nervous. I just got an email announcing a new non-catalog item -Marklin 27918 Union Pacific 2 car tank car set. It looks pretty cool BUT... on close inspection the wheels aren't much to look at, it's half the length of the prototype and appears to be plastic? That's all OK, but checking dealers prices it will set the purchaser back $90 +/-. I hope this is not the future of Marklin pricing strategy. That's a lot of money for what appears to be a couple of small plastic tank cars.

These have been discussed under the 2022 new items thread. Also you have the catalog number wrong.

Merged that thread here /BDNZ

Hah ThumpUp ThumpUp ThumpUp I hadn't picked up on that, I did note that the numbers were different, but hadn't associated them with the date.

It is an April fools day special edition: "Einmalige Auflage zum 1. April 2022".
German tank cars in UP livery. Road numbers 0104 and 2022 for the date 01. April 2022.

I think I'll skip it.

The cars have buffers - not really typical for US rolling stock.

47918 is the correct number.

This is because they appear to be using the Heavy Oil tank wagons of other 4391x series models instead of a US prototype.

That is how UP painted the excursion train tankers, starting with the 2019 150 year celebration trains, and it does not match any heritage markings.

An extension set for the 43617 set would be great.

The two baggage coaches and four passenger coaches do not make a very convincing train, particularly when pulled by such large locos.

I guess that I have fallen way behind in my reading of the Marklin new items.

This is the first time that I have seen these cars. Did someone say they they were tank cars?

Thanks for showing,

That would be nice, but I am not holding my breath. BigGrin

In the past the extra tankers were for water and not fuel, since steam locos use a lot more water than fuel by volume. When used to haul extra water they were called canteens. Most railroads replenished water twice as often as fuel in normal use, but that was for coal burners and it might be different for oil burners.

Märklin implies that they were for fuel oil, but I have not tried to determine what these tank cars were actually used for during excursion use.

Jim

A quick search indicates that these are indeed water tankers or canteens, and appropriate for coal and oil fired locos.

Here is a quote from KATO about their water tenders:

"Accompanying the "living legend" FEF-3 is always at least one of a pair of Union Pacific Water Tenders, carrying spare water for the steam engine (Water filling stations being a rarity in the diesel era). These unique re-built cars have seen service as both Steam and Gas Turbine Electric fuel tenders before finally settling into their current forms as part of UP's steam heritage fleet where they operate as separate (but always-present) cars."

thanks

As suggested propper set of water tenders released as part of an extension set for the 43617 set would be very welcome.
a new release of the 43617 at the same time would also probably be welcome, as they sell for around 500 to800€ on ebay.

These are essentially the water tenders which would go with item #43617, although they are not the correct tank bodies, the livery is correct. I suspect they are as close as we will ever get to the correct canteens, which at least are similar to the ones they used.

I want an expansion set for the 43617, with more coaches and an observation coach, but I will be surprised if one ever appears.

Had a second look at this image of the 991 on the Märklin pages, since the background seemed a bit out of place......
https://www.maerklin.de/fileadmin/media/lp/website/Landingpages/Andreas/2022/litra-e991/maerklintrix-website-mrz22-litra-galerie2-gross.png

a quick search reviled that the picture is from Hoyvíksgarður on theFaroe Islands, a remote group of islands in the middle of the Atlantic without any railways.
the original. https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/exciting-morning-view-typical-turftop-houses-1563449323
Märklin flipped and cropped it.
In their defence, it's the first image that appears on Shutterstock when you search for Denmark + Landscape.

Marklin were showing these on their Facebook site a couple of nights ago. I figured since I've already got the G2000 and the Vectron Store locos, I wouldn't bother with the Class 66. I've been making up some black container loads with the Marklin logo on them (a friend had some sticky labels made up for me), so replicating the new container wagon would not be hard.

Hmm, some nice items there ...

BUT already replacing the C track turntable??? At least this one looks weathered from production.

Replacements for the 73400 series coach interior lights, now with capacitors.

An expensive track plan book in both German and English (seperate books).

The Br03 "Schorsch“ in G1.

I like the Br101 in Dampfbahn-Route livery in both H0 and Z.

The Store Loco has serious white bibs on the ends, which glare somewhat against the black loco.

A G2000 in Belgian livery.

A wagon set to go with the 'Das ist grun' Br193 Vectron.

Most of the rest of the H0 stuff we have already seen.

Actually it's the Br02. But yes, it is a nice model and would be on my list if I had a spare 3500€.

A wagon set to go with the 'Das ist grun' Br193 Vectron.

The track plan book looks a starter for me, though as you say it isn't cheap.

I've got the previous 2 Store locos so I will pass on this one.

I quite like the wagon set with timber loads. Again 200€ isn't cheap....

A "cheap" summer for me. No Era 2, and I've already ordered the DSB Lok (actually have this) and the UP April Fools cars. That leaves the track planner and the Magazine Car.

The Ae 6/6 is described as having a modified front. It appears that Maerklin has retooled the model so that it no longer features a window insert with a painted strut and the model will have this element molded as part of the metal frame. This means that it will not be possible to retrofit older models with the window panes from this new model.

It makes sense in that the window was a weak point of the Maerklin model compared to those of Hag, Roco and Piko.

I am a little concerned that the model (sample) illustrated shows the handrail situated a little too close to the window. IMHO this should be a mm lower on the model.

Regards

Mike C

Actually it is BR 02 0314, not BR 02, not Br02.
BR 02 was the sister of BR 01, but all BR 02 locos were modified to become BR 01 in the end.

We were referring to the first part of the loco's Road number, I'm sure everyone got that.

That's the Märklinist point of view.
The real railway differentiates between BR 02 0201, BR 02 0314, and BR 02 - three completely different classes. Writing "BR 02" means "BR 02 0201" when talking about Roco, but means "BR 02 0314" when talking about Märklin while it means "BR 02" when talking about Brawa.
Proposal: drop the "BR" when you just use the first two digits of the road number.

Tom

The 39197 'Das ist grun' Vectron isn't a new item for Summer 2022, it was a new item for Summer 2021, although it seems it is a reissue this time as well.

This time around there's also some freight wagons to go with the Vectron - the 47153 wagon set.

Interestingly the Vectron doesn't appear in the Trix version of the brochure, just the Marklin wagonset with the wheel exchange info.

Sorry, I meant 02, lack of proof reading on my part before going to bed Blushing

I see they have motivated the Lokfuher so he 'moves' the controls, now i have read the English version. Will have to watch the video to see if they illustrate the action.

The book has 160 pages, with 25 plans in K and C track. But I wonder if this is really just a reprint of layouts presented in the Marklin Magazine.

I'm up for the store Loco and wagon, but now I need to expand the number of wagons so that each loco has a full set ... Blink Crying

I guess we are just going to have to get used to prices forever creeping up as material availability/supply and shipping costs keep climbing.

Somewhere along the line we will need to recalibrate ourselves to the new 'normal' price.

According to Wascosa's website the "Tank Car 3000" is not this type of car. It is the Zans type used for mineral oil. There is a Zacens for chemical loading but not in the "Tank Car 3000" livery.
