Older German freight cars have a black plaque which usually have three symbols on them. One of them seems to be the crest of the kingdom they are from but I have long wondered what the other two are. One looks like a variant of a cross or a route layout while the other seems to be a collection of boxes. Any idea what they represent.

Hello rhfil I assume you mean this chalk-board used on German wagons. That is a really interesting question, thanks for asking. I suppose you might be referring to era I where the railways were owned by the various German states such as Prussia or Bavaria. Without researcing this, I have always believed it to be used to chalk messages for routing the wagon. In right bottom corner is a spring-loaded pocket net to hold a waybill (card or paper) showing load, customer and destination detail. The white cross(es) are used to chalk junction station names if needed to arrive at the destination. I have no idea of the three boxes. Above the boxes is the word Übergangsettel which means labels for transit (my guess). Someone else here may throw further light on this subject. Kimball |

Did not know that was a chalkboard. Seeing the Kingdom crest I assumed that all the information on the plaque was permanent but knowing it is a chalkboard and changeable makes me think that the upper left symbol is perhaps a routing map and the bottom symbol is the number of cars in the shipment. Just a guess though.

For some reason I can't get the video to cut and paste into the forum post. Maybe youtube is up to something new blocking stuff, I don't know. The video is titled "Bundesbahn- Lehrfilme Rangier Dienst" You can search it that way. It shows the use of the chalk board on freight wagons along with other cool old stuff. So it appears that the crosses and boxes are standard on the chalkboards and the crosses are for crossing information. "Ubergang" means crossing and I can not find any definition of "settel". Unfortunately my German is too basic to understand the narration of the great film but it appears to me that it is the form they keep writing on. Would love an English version of it.

amazing video, fabulous documentation of the operations. Those men earned their money and every day someone did not get killed was a good day.

The word is Zettel = a note or 'chit' - small piece of paper
The lines on the board do not represent tracks, it is more like a blank form for dates times and track numbers in a standard layout.
What keeps me awake at night is who washes them all off and when...

What I found to be very informative was how complex marshalling a consist was. Also the depiction of something we immaturely joked about in my youth - humping cars. Getting a placard that said "Do not hump" was a goal of all us collegiate males.
