How do you guys manage do simulate asphalte (or any road surfaces) for your rail crossing and still maintain center rail connection?

I purchased a set from Faller containing a rail crossing and a Faller Car System start set. Re. the rail crossing, the only items I ended up using are the ”between-the-rail” pieces. The rail crossing can be purchased separate.

I used Plastic Padding to fix the ”piano string” included for the mid rail. Here is a clip of my rail crossing:

For those who did not see this there was an interesting post in this thread by « costing » on a railroad crossing he did with retailing at the same time:

By the same token I am looking at using the Veismann 5104 gates which look very good and realistic

Hi
Using C rail, there is a possibility based on the following principles:
- Use a normal C Rail 24188 and make the crossing in the center of the rail
- using a soldering iron, make the stud iron bar force its way up in the rail until it reaches 0.5mm above the rail level
- cut 2 studs every 3 , enough for a slider to operate (and to make studs more discrete)
- prepare a "road surface" from a thin polycarbonate plastic: a rectangle with a width of 13.7 mm and the length of your road width. The end angles are bevelled.
- coat remaining studs with paint to mark the underneath of the road surface and drill it
- install the road surface so that it is flush with the rails top surface.
- paint it. It is finished

Long text but it does not take very long to do it
Cheers
Jean

Jean,
I use a similar method, but use carbon paper. Remember that?!

Yes Roger Carbon paper is even better when you have it handy.

For the road asphalt surface, one key question is, do you just need dumb road, or do you need to be able to run Faller Car System over it?

For 'dumb road' one approach used by some (assuming you don't just buy the road crossing solutions with crossing gates from the suppliers that make them)... is to get some card stock that is thin (or paper that is thick), lay it on the track section, then apply pressure to emboss the rail and pukos on the card/paper. Then cut the strip out a bit thinner to allow for wheel flanges, and use a hole punch to punch where the pukos are. Test fit. Then paint the card stock (not water based paint!) to the needed color and glue it down into the track.
Toys of tin and wood rule!

I find 0.2mm stainless steel wire to be the best. Drill a hole at each end of the crossing to run the wire over and then secure the wire ends underneath with a screw. You then connect that to your traction power.

I used the technique for my platform crossings seen here:

Viessmann connector nice, but $5.50 plus shipping for one! The wire fix is more economical.
