Hello fellow modellers, May I introduce to you the metamorphosis of a small section of Märklin’s C track in three different pictures. To achieve this work of art in two simple steps all you need is; 1. Ballast - Wooland Scenics - Fine Grey. 2. Paint- Golden Artist Coulor Inc. - Burnt Unber. May the pictures speak of the beauty!

Around 20 years ago I asked a Marklin rep who was running a training class here in the UK if there was any liklihood of marklin producing a 22000 series of K track with the code 93 railof C track instead of code 100 rail, and he said no. The K track production was around 10% of the C track production at that stage (and C track had only been around 5-6 years at that stage), so he didn't see any development effort being put into it.

Looks really good! I am guessing the Burnt Umber is an oil based wash you used on the track? Did you do anything special to colour the sides of the rails? Curious about the technique you used for applying it. Thanks

Hi Darren, Thanks! With this monumental task I need all the accolades I can get to keep me focused on completing this! I’ve been working on painting the tracks for the last three days (4-6 hours each day) on my layout, what a big job! The Burnt Unber “Light” is GOLDEN’s Fluid Acrylic which is formulated from a 100% water-based acrylic emulsion. I mix that with equal parts of Golden Airbrush Medium which is then airbrushed on to the side of the tracks. I guess the only thing that is special is that it takes me four applications with the airbrush to get that perfect rust colour effect! Today I’m finally beginning to paint the tracks entering Hamburg station on my layout! The pictures from my iPad really don’t do it any justice as it really looks quite fabulous. Definitely worth the time and effort!

WOW that is a lot of airbrushing! I commend you for your efforts they will pay off. I first thought you were doing just a wash to add the brown/rust but I couldn't figure out how you got the sides of the rails so nice. I have an airbrush but I need a lot more practice with it. Thank you for sharing.
Cheers

Yes a lot of airbrushing and to be honest this is my first time airbrushing tracks! I airbrushed mountains on my previous K track layout. But I was not comfortable using the airbrush so I used a brush instead and that took me more than forty hours to do! After I finished with the brush I did go over the ballast lightly using the airbrush to get the that look of washed rust on the ballast. I should be downstairs doing some more but I decided to give it a break today. One thing I would like to mention is that I position the airbrush about 2” / 5 centimetres from the track and I hold the airbrush straight at a right angle 📐 while I spray. The spray pattern is very narrow maybe two full turns on the needle valve. Slow and precise strokes, a foot / 30cm at a time. Just for some clarity on my previous K track layout. When I was almost done with it I found that going around the room wasn’t doing me any favours so I started to work on a better track plan which eventually became this one. And I must add using C track is working wonders for that special railway/railroad look!

As mentioned earlier the pictures from the iPad are not representing the true colours that you actually see! You have to see it in person, it really knocks my socks off! Is the sleeper between two side of rails fitable with ballasting to slightly hide the obvious third rail ?

Hello Shannon, I deliberately kept the top of my C tracks free from ballast for two reasons. 1. The simulated ballast on top looked quite right and has the neat and clean visual effect that I like. 2. I did not want to fuss around with the tedious task of placing and arranging the ballast on the top. I must admit that to achieve my results I did experiment on some loose pieces of c track. It worked out well for me and the accomplishment is well worth the effort! Since my railroad is a first class line I was striving for a very clean and well manicured roadbeds. I must say for myself I achieved my goals and then some!!! But first remember this is still a work in progress as I have lots of enjoyment ahead of me creating the scenery, what a wonderful hobby we have.

Hello, I first started with C track on buying a Märklin starter set in 2005. Having built layouts over many years with flex track and messy ballasting, it was a joy to set up a simple layout and immensely rewarding to run trains free of problems. As I have said before C track is a really top-quality product. The joy of trains running faultlessly far over-shadows any mis-givings I might have of how my C track looks without any ballasting or weathering. As you say John the hobby caters for different ideas on what gives pleasure. I use C track just native out of the box. regards Kimball |
