Thanks, there's better content in there than in the Marklin Magazine!

Thanks for the heads-up, the articles on the V80 are most interesting, in particular because of the variety of wagons the locomotive can pull.

Hi

You are right, that V80 looks like an excellent locomotive.

I also enjoy the articles about new product releases and to see the great layouts and maybe get some ideas.

Take good care.

Doesn't it? I hope there's a non-insider version soon!

Cheers

There are already reports of faulty V80's
Hope mine is fine. Didn't have the chance to test it yet!

Really? What sort of faults are people reporting?

Fingers crossed you have no trouble with yours!

All the best

Derailments come as a surprise - provided I've replaced any plastic wheels with metal, that's something I almost never experience. The only exception, really, is if I run very long trains - by that I mean 13 or more 26m bogie coaches. I'm pretty sure they would be fine if my layout wasn't mostly on a 3% gradient, but must also be helped that I have nothing less than a 220mm radius curve.

I notice that V80 has a new bogie arrangement, and it's not clear from the exploded drawing how the pivot works, so I wonder if it moves less freely than the "traditional" arrangement and this is the cause of problems?

As for overheating, it sounds like this loco has a much greater gearing reduction that usual, so the motor will be running faster and perhaps this is the cause. I have noticed with the 88167 railbus set that it takes more voltage to get it started the longer it has been running - my interpretation being that the armature is warming up and causing the current to be lower as a result. I like the coreless motor (especially when it has a flywheel) for its smooth running and consistent speed, but it's not without its problems, in my opinion.

Cheers

And now more and more people are opening their V80.. and stumbling on bad or dodgy soldering. Ah Marklin.. (love/hate)²

This is a beautiful locomotive! As others have pointed out, it is geared to run slow- and the top speed is low compared to other Marklin locomotives of its ilk. As a consequence, it is not as quiet as other small locomotives with the bell anchor motor such as the BR80 or the V36, or as smooth. That said, I haven't really run mine in yet.

The issue with mine is that it is noisier on curves, though it is certainly not enough of a problem to send it for service.

Hi everyone.

I was looking at the information on the V80 on Wikipedia and it stated the V 80 001 was the first unit of class V 80 introduced by the DB in 1953 with originally 800 hp

Perhaps as this z scale model was developed this was taken into consideration and the gearing adjusted appropriately. Still a nice locomotive, when the bugs get worked out.

Just a thought.

Best wishes

Dwight
