Hi guys, When I got into model railways a few short months ago, the guy at the local model shop said "AL, buy N gauge". Did I listen...well!

Anyway in the absence of anything out there I am having a go at making my own BR Class 156 DMU.

I think I will go for this Strathclyde Passenger Transport livery as it reminds me of my daily commute as a yoof.

This is the drawing I am working from

This is my first draft Fusion 360 CAD model

These are my first two prints. On the second print I have opted for a single piece model. On the first print you can see the ends of the DMU are separate pieces. I deemed this too fiddly.

Very interesting; what are you going to use for the bogies and how are you going to power it?

I guess the DMU is longer than the Shorty's chassis - so when you come to do this, can you please post lots of photos/explanations about how you did it.

I have very little experience with the other scales but if you can make Z scale things yourself I think you will always be glad you chose Z. It seems like Z scale has incredible craftsmen. Nice work!

I have orange on order, so I decided in the meantime to go with the British Rail livery.

Edit: I don't get why this forum sometimes puts an inline preview of the image and sometimes not?

Edit of the Edit: I guess it takes some time to generate the thumbnail.

Ok slight deviation in plan. I ordered laser printer waterslide decal paper and restarted the livery from white primer again.

The livery on the side is 100% white decal over white Tamiya primer. i.e. no coloured paint on the sides. The roof and end is sprayed with Humbrol acrylic spray.

I also added windows

very very tiny windows.

Very much inspired and encouraged by Al's success in 3D printing locomotive shells, here is my first print attempt at a body shell for one of the locomotives of the Ferrocarril de Sóller in Mallorca on which my layout is loosely based.

A few refinements still to do and then the challenge of powering it (I have a Shorty chassis on its way to me) but I'm very happy with this first attempt.

Hope this is of interest

Very cool! This 3D printing stuff is magic to me, I have no idea how the “drafting” is done. But what you have there is a nice shell and great looking loco.

Thanks very much for the kind comment. The printing process is something I'm still getting to grips with, but I have managed to get a few usable pieces out of it so far! As for the drafting, the way I do it isn't a sophisticated process!

All the best
