Hi All

Next year I am moving to Madeira BigGrin and would like to know if Marklin is active there or any fellow Marklin enthusiasts.

Interesting bit of history here that might interest you.

Pity they abandoned plans to restore the Rack-railway itself.

I remember the airport as being quite scary...but at least it doesn't have traffic crossing the runway like a certain rock...

Some decades ago, it was really dangerous, but now it is not anymore after it was extended and improved a lot.

About 30 years ago my wife's parents took a holiday on Madeira. The flight from the UK was direct to Funchal but on the return journey, because of the short runway, the aircraft only took on enough fuel to reach the Portuguese mainland (Faro I think). There it refuelled and completed the last leg back to the UK. The current extended runway must have improved the service tremendously.

The runaway was extended from the original 1600 meters to 2781 meters: https://madeira.best/gui...t/madeira-island-airport

I remember the very first time I flew into Wgton, it was a good strong Northerly, and I was in a Fokker Friendship which was crabbing into the wind. I could see the airport runway out the window until the last moment when the pilot pulled the aircraft straight to touch down ... Scared Woot

Only pussies fly into Wellington on a good day, arriving in a howling southerly or nor'wester builds resilience !! (and appreciation for being on solid ground) LOL

Uh, you young people cannot take it anymore. Back to Portugal: You should try the Azores archipelago during a winter gale. Approaching the São Miguel runway one stormy Christmas night, our A320 pilot decided to take off again immediately after touching the ground. Instead of attempting another landing, he decided to divert us to Lisbon, one and a half flight hours away on the continent.

Those of us who actually do fly into Wellington mean it’s rough when we say a “good day”
