The layout is 1 Gauge (1:32) with the addition of narrow gauge track and trains, which are what you see in John's pictures.

The layout has a Saxon theme, with the main station area being Zittau.

I have some photos of the layout which I can post later, and there is also a webpage on the net with photos of the layout, but I'm blowed if I can find it at the moment!

The layout is something like 22m x 12m so a very large area to fill.

Bertsdorf signal box and engine shed made an appearance today to test fit size and placement

The track beside the engine shed can be realigned so that the aisle way will be expanded to 600mm (currently about 470mm)

Backdrops realigned, couple of trees planted, and even a picture of me planting them

Overall a good days work!

In 1902 George Troup, who would later become officer in charge or the architectural branch of the New Zealand Railway Department was sent to Europe on a fact finding tour of the Sachsen 750mm narrow gauge network to determine whether there were any practices or improvements which could be brought back and implemented in New Zealand.

It was while on an excursion to the Zittau-Oybin/Jonsdorf line that he became involved in discussions about the replacement of the 18 meter Natzschwasser Brücke which was due for replacement. Recognising that 18 meters is approximately 60 feet, he proposed that by using two NZR 30 foot girder bridges, the bridge could be replaced with a steel structure.
At this time the Sachsen authorities were open to new ideas and with the Spring influx of visitors not to far away it was decided to try Troup’s idea and the contract to build it was awarded to Markieren Modellwerkstatt.

The bridge was installed in time for the spring timetable, but due to upcoming world events it was viewed as to “Englisch ” and the bridge while being successful was never installed in other locations and so ended up being a one off.

The opportunity to model such a unique structure of the line has been commenced on one of the access ways using a Marks Model Works 9mm 30 foot girder bridge. Pier work was salvaged from long time Marklin Model Rail Club of Wellington Member Paul Alcock.

Another productive day on the layout.

The original track plan for the narrow gauge had the line leaving Zittau station and passing under Radeburg to Bertsdorf. It then went either to Oybin or to Jonsdorf and Johstadt. The line under Radeburg never really worked electrically so a decision was made to change the layout to create a loop (Radeburg, Bertsdorf, Jonsdorf, Johstadt) while retaining the point to point nature Zittau, Radeburg, Bertsdorf Oybin/Jonsdorf, Johstadt.

IMG_6393.JPGIMG_6394.JPGIMG_6395.JPGIMG_6397.JPG

This along with the track realignment between Bertsdorf and Radeburg has taken a lot of time. It is hoped that by the end of the month that the loop track will be up and running. Still on the list of track realignment there is only one road in Bertsdorf that goes to Jonsdorf, so we are investigating replacing the fixed cross over to a pair of points which will open up the three loop roads in Bertsdorf for access to Johsdorf.

IMG_6380.JPGIMG_6381.JPG

We have taken the backdrop behind Oybin down for now so that access can be gained to the standard gauge mainline. A scenic block will be put between the standard and narrow gauge and the backdrop attached to the back wall.

A special one of the layout owner working hard on the brick work for Bertsdorf station.

Glad you got to reuse it. I was very careful in removing the pier / abutment work from Paul's layout in the hope that someone somewhere could reuse it!

Today was a big day!!!!

Mark has made some more progress on the George Troup memorial bridge. Bridge sleepers are done (3d print) bridge its self painted and weathered.

The Radeburg/Jöhstadt connection is in. Couple of tight spots that may need to be eased, but stock is running through it. Soon to be wired up and trains running

Last night I was given Bertsdorf signal box to paint.

Douglas and Mark decided it would be a good idea to put some interior details into it as well. Very kindly of them!!!!

A little bit of colour certainly makes a difference.

Need to put the windows and doors in, some work on the interior, roof guttering and down pipes, little bit of weathering and it will look the part.

So I am pretty happy with how the Bertsdorf signal box is coming along. The colouring looks good in the natural light.

800px-Bertsdorf-Bf1.jpg IMG_6559.JPG IMG_6576.JPGIMG_6575.JPGIMG_6577.JPGIMG_6578.JPG

It will get a test fit on the layout today, so more pictures later. Some "Round the bays run" is on at the moment so they have shut the roads until lunch time

Lots still to do

  • Glaze windows

  • Finish the roof

  • Guttering

  • Down pipes

  • weathering

  • interior detailing

  • interior lighting

Although on Sunday a big focus was on the running of the trains, some other things have been happening.

Mark relaid the track to create the loop between Jöhstadt and Radeburg

The old alignment had a number of tight spots that derailed the wagons
IMG_6554.JPG

The new alignment has a gentler curve but has reduced the length of one of the loop roads in Jöhstadt
IMG_6598.JPG

I started mocking up the road between Jöhstadt and Jonsdorf
IMG_6597.JPG

The thread is called the Zittau project suitably named after the main standard gauge station that is being modeled. To give an indication as to the size of the station building here is a picture of the left hand annex building that does not sit on the sheet of polystyrene, the rest of the building does. The sheet is 1.8 meters by 1.2 meters

It is with much sadness that I have to advise that the my good friend and owner of this layout, Tim, passed away peacefully this morning.

At this stage it is unsure as to what further progress may or may not be made on the layout.

The signal box is nearing completion and we hope to have at least one more running session and will post some video of that if it happens

Rest in peace my friend, the world has lost a great Marklin enthusiast today

Tim's passing leaves a very big hole in the hearts of all who knew him. I thought it would be a fitting tribute to share this article that was printed back in 2008. Tim's final comment is what got me....

I'm really sorry and shocked to hear that news. I last caught up with Tim at the MMRC anniversary event in 2015 (a couple of decades after first meeting him whilst viewing his equally epic HO layout in the 1990s), and really enjoyed his enthusiasm for Maerklin trains and the hobby, and I had been following this new project with interest. A genuinely nice guy. My sincere condolences to friends and family. Richard Lang

Here is a picture of Tim standing on Bertsdorf Platform. Many thanks to Karl-Heinz and Anita Stange

tim bertsdorf.jpg

I think its pretty cool picture, and if Bertsdorf gets completed, it will be a detail that goes on the platform.

*** (Below is John's tribute to Tim read by John at Tim's Funeral last week) *** (Cookee)

Hello, my name is John and I have known Tim for over thirty years through what some would say was our obsession with but I like to refer to as my hobby of model railways with Marklin Model trains.

Tim was a great supporter of the Wellington Marklin Model Railway club, and was the clubs honorary auditor for over 30 years. He was influential in the clubs decision to obtain it's first club rooms in Silverstream. His wise counsel and steady approach will be sadly missed by the club

While in Khandallah he embarked on his first great model railway project, The HO empire of the Back Forest. He devoted much time and effort into research for this layout. This research was not without some issues. Freiburg station was destroyed during World War 2 and of course Tim wanted to model it as it was in the 1930’s Finally, he found some photos and was able to build it, with of course the working clock tower.

Once a month a group of modelers would arrive on a Sunday afternoon to operate the layout. Margaret as ever would put on an amazing afternoon tea.

It was also at this time when he began one of his great collections, that of Marklin items from the 1952 Marklin catalogue, the year he was born. It never ceased to amaze me how he could find some of the items that he did. Locomotives and wagons are relatively easy, but unused packets of wire, now that is dedication and showed just how important this project was to him. I doubt anyone else could have completed such a unique collection. Once that collection was done he moved onto the Faller building and prieser figures from 1952, again not easy items to find, but he did.

Tim was a founding member of the gauge one special interest group in Wellington, who collectively own and operate the exhibition layout Istein.

At the initial planning of the layout, Tim decided that he would build a station for the layout. On a trip to the black forest, Tim would say it was a holiday, Margaret knew it was a research expedition, The family were driving around and as dusk was falling Caroline spotted Istein, a station on a curve, which became the foundation of the exhibition layout. In the time available Tim was taking measurements, pictures and quick drawings so he could model it when he got home. He would have spent longer there but ran out of light.

His last grand model railway projected started in earnest when he moved to Oriental Parade. I will note that prior to the move he had built a scale model of the layout, and there are a couple of unique parts of the basement that allow the trains to pass through the concrete wall. No doubt some of you here may have been down to the basement in Oriental Parade where the Zittau Project as it has become known as resides, a large scale empire encompassing a number of scenes as Tim referred to them of the area around saxony. To give context to this the Zittau station building covers almost 3 quare meters of space

Many people helped over the last 8 years with the layout. Peter L who cannot make it here today, Peter C and Jan were instrumental in it's early phases. My friend Douglas became an important contributor with his laser cutter producing all manner of items, the biggest being the platform canopy’s for Zittau station some 10 meters long. Tim if nothing else was doing it on a grand scale

In the last five months a small team of Douglas, Jason, Mark, Michael, Nikoli and myself have all contributed to get the layout to where Tim was able to see some progress in his last days, and I also must mention Steve who has put considerable time into the HO and Z layouts at the back of the garage.

While the dream was not completed, it had started to take substantial shape.

My lasting memory of Tim is a simple one that summed up the man in my opinion. On his last visit to the layout the Fairhall family were all in the train room. They were having chocolate cake to celebrate James’s birthday. His much loved granddaughter was running one of his narrow gauge trains back and forth along the line. And you could tell just how much pleasure Tim got from that. Margaret then got given the controller and for the first time ever, ran one of Tims trains, It had only taken over 40 years but Tim got to see her not only running a train but having a great deal of fun doing it.

To Margaret, James, Caroline and your families, your father was a well respected modeller, and a true gentleman. It was my privilege and others within the model train community to call him our friend. He will be sadly missed.

Prior to Tim's passing I had started adding details to the Bertsdorf Signal box

The signal box has embossed signage and some thought was put into this. One issue was how to keep it straight when attaching them. I decided to glue them on before cutting them off the sprue.

One issue I came across was that once they were cut off there was a mark on the bottom. Little bit of paint fixes that, but not totally necessary. i suppose.

There are snow guards on the roof, interestingly when they go on they are very soft because of the wet paint. I have used the paint to stick them on, rather than glue. Once the paint dries they straighten up sufficiently to look like they have been used.

The guttering has individual brackets, and while time consuming will look good when finished

As well as the Zittau project, Tim also had an impressive trio of H0 and Mini-Club layouts, and a vintage H0 layout/item collection of his birth year - 1952. My last project with Tim prior to his passing was the testing and maintenance of his Z-gauge having just completed the H0 range.

I thought I would add a couple of photos of his layout which was very much in 'draft' mode, but the basic plan was in place. It was modelled on a portion of Berlin and other areas. I was sadly not able to get a full run on the layout (trackwork), but it was getting close. We don't see a lot of Z-gauge here and perhaps this should be in the Small gauge thread but it sort of more belongs here in memory of Tim.

While the layout may be small-scale - it would be fair to say Tim never did anything on a small scale ThumpUp

This is Tim's plan for the layout, sorry it's not so clear but gives some idea

Oh my gosh. As a Z-scaler...I'm so amazed at this. Tim clearly was an amazing modeller...and Marklin devotee. I'm only now thinking of getting into 1 Gauge...after more 15 years of Z-scale...but there's something about the "Marklin" brand and charm...that makes me want to stay with Marklin regardless of the scale.

Progress continues on the signal box with NZ in lock down

Still some work to do in terms of the guttering, light weathering, and some smaller details, but the building and its interior are now substantially done

The first step is to disassemble the building, and give it an undercoat of its base colouring.

I decided that with this building, since the blanlk/unwindowed end faces the railway line and is unlikely to be seen, that I would have a raw concrete end as opposed to the white that the rest of the building is going to have.

I have started to test fit it all back together. The building has two floors and a ceiling!!! The front and back door are recessed which requires some internal painting as well

IMG_6686.JPGIMG_6685.JPGIMG_6687.JPG

I may or may not put some internal lighting and detailing in it, depends on my level of motivation. Needless to say once the floors are affixed, and the walls go up, there will be no way to add anything!!!!
