I've been around Marklin since the 1960s but have never had a loco with Telex.
A 3027 arrived recently that needs work. Everything works well but...
...it has Telex but how is this supposed to work?
Is it supposed to act on a second blip when moving forward?
Or is it supposed to work on a 'blip' after a reversing, or forwards blip?
Mine only seems to work on every eighth blip which I assume is the same as the number of teeth on the revolving drum of the reversing unit. Hmmm.
The soldering around the reversing unit is certainly not 'factory'. I wonder...
Any suggestions welcome but please tell me how it is supposed to work when set up properly and I can go from there.

Hi Michael
It is operated by the direction relay which has 4 positions: - forward no Telex - forward with Telex - reverse no Telex - reverse with Telex Note: the Telex remains activated until the next overvoltage pulse. If this is not working like this you may have contact issues on the relay (normally located in the loco). Cheers Jean |

Hi Jean,
Thereis obviously something quite wrong because forward is followed by reverse etc without any telex instruction in between. I will do some test and see. Thanks for the link.

Hi Michael If forward is followed by reverse and forward again, then the only thing I could foresee is that the relay has been replaced with a standard one (ratchet relay). Please open the loco (it is normally in the loco but was in the tender on some versions Jean |

Hi Jean, This doesn't look like the normal relay. I'm pretty sure it is the correct one but I really do not like the quality of the soldering so maybe someone has got the connections wrong? If so I reckon I'm looking for some guidance! IMG_4119 by dralowid, on Flickr IMG_4120 by dralowid, on Flickr Ignore the broken valve gear, a replacement is on its way!

It indeed looks like the rotary "Perfect Schaltung" relay that was used with Telex locos a long time ago.
Units that I have had mainly have showed problems with contact between the "arms" and the rotary cylinder...
However, could also be a broken wire to the Telex - these thin wires are very delicate an can break. Or the coil in the coupler itself may also be burnt. Just speculating a bit here, not an expert with these but have had some for repair. |

The coupler's electro magnet does work so I think that is OK. It seems to be actuated by itself every eight impulses.
It would be easy to swap it for a normal reversing unit (I have several) but where is the fun in that?! This is a challenge!

Hello Michael, I do have the same loco but did not run it for over 50 years. Do you have the manual and spar part list for this loco? Wanted to scan it for you, but then I found it in the internet as a PDF file already. manual http://maerklin-sammler-...3027/03027_m_bda_002.pdfexplosion drawing http://maerklin-sammler-...en/03027/03027_explo.pdfAt Page 6 is the Telex-description in English. But I remember the handling in the way Jean has already written about it. Here some more information about this historic model. http://maerklin-sammler-...omotiven/03027/03027.htmEnjoy your new oldie Regards Wolfgang

Hi Michael Thank you for the pictures. Yes it is the good relay. If the coil is working then you can repair it. One word of advice: be extremely careful when removing the unit (the one screw near the contacts as the tiny enameled wire is connected there (the ground return of the solenoid) and can be broken easily. Once removed it is easy to disassemble, straighten contacts and clean then My image hosting is temporarily unavailable so I attach the picture: an opened relay. Telex relay.png (1,607kb) downloaded 53 time(s).It is made of 7 parts: - the solenoid supporting also the 3 contacts (2 extreme for motor coils, the center one for Telex) - the armature and the pivoting plate - the rotor (sort of drum with circular segments - the ratchet - the rotor holder - the auxiliary contact ((to stop the motor when the relay is activated - the spring I hope this helps Most probably someone has tinkered with contact soldering. When making new solder make sure to make them on the point of attachment (as far as possible from the contact itself. Cheers Jean |

I see that wire, it is small!
Thanks all. I will first have a bit of fiddle with the unit in place to understand it better. As I have said I am quite familiar with the normal one so just need to understand what this does or is supposed to do on top of the normal functions. I am due to receive some new valve gear in a few days which will require the removal of the unit so will wait for that to arrive and do it all at once.
Still looking for a wheelset for the tender, Radsatz D12 70 005. One of the better Ebay vendors has them at a low price and low cost postage but I have not heard back from him, but then he may have other things on his mind, he is in Bologna.

...and, half an hour with a bright light, lighter fluid, some cloth and a tiny screwdriver and it is 'nearly' working consistently without removal.
I say 'nearly'... Forwards OK / Forwards plus telex OK /Reverse OK / Reverse plus telex unreliable / Telex on until next blip OK...so I still need to work on that contact.
Clever little thing isn't it?! When fiddling around with things like this a little voice in my head starts mentioning 'digital'.
'Get thee behind me Satan' says I.
Thanks all.
