Greetings,

I have an Aster live steam BR 86. I live in the state of Utah in the USA. I have always admired Marklin models but have no experience with modeling German railways.

I would like to model a plausible mixed freight branchline train to go with my BR 86. I'd like to model the 1950's.

From what I can learn, a 1950's train could include wagons from Era II, but only some from Era III. For example, is this type of box van too modern for 1950's? I have scrubbed online and can't find an era listing for these.

Also, I'd like to use a set of 2 or 3 Donnerbuchse for the passengar cars. It also looks like I could use Umbauwagen, as they started to appear mid-1950's. Given that Donnerbuchse date back to the 1930's, were Donnerbuchse ever converted to Umbauwagen in the 1950s? Would these type of Umbauwagen actually have been deployed on branch lines?

Thanks in advance,

-Richard

So, we are speaking about gauge 1?

Alsterstreek,

Yes, Gauge One. Or Spur 1 I think we should say!

THANK YOU for taking the time to reply. It's fun to try to learn these things but I'm just at the start.

That lokmuseum database is perfect. Many thanks for pointing me to that.

OK, so I'm headed in the right direction with Umbauwagen. I like them because they are so unique with that 3rd axle.

The links to the Bonus Pix are tremendous. GREAT stuff there. I will try a few search in bundesbahnzeit, see if I can find some mixed trains led by BR 86.

I notice that the lokmusuem listing for this car shows "kuhlwagon". Were all of these types of cars with the doors kuhlwagons (refridgerated or iced cars?)

Thanks again,

-Richard

No, those covers you circled are standard box car ventilation openings. Actually, the entire car looks rather like a standard box car painted white. I believe there is some artistic license involved. Maybe Sinalco soft drinks didn’t need sophisticated cooling. Maybe this forum´s beer car collector community knows more?

Here is a drawing of a “classic” contemporary West German mechanic reefer (with insulated doors etc):

P.S.: I have fond memories of travelling through Utah.

Likewise, thanks for enlightenment! Especially the photos in www.bundesbahnzeit.de were fantastic.

Quick question: how are mixed trains referred to in German so I can do a search? Also, what is the correct term for branch line?

Mixed train = „gemischter Zug“
Alternatively:
Freight train with passenger service = „Güterzug mit Personenbeförderung“
Passenger train with freight transport =
„Personenzug mit Güterbeförderung“

Branch line = „Nebenbahn“
