I guess it was inevitable, but last time I checked her maybe 5 years ago my Seetal Croc 37521 still appeared to be unaffected.

Most of my Marklin has been packed away for 5 or more years now, while I have been slowly having my eyes repaired.
Today I tried to run her and the motor spun but nothing moved.

Taking the top off......

The frame is actually the least affected and harder to spot until you look at the end view in the third photo.

Both the gear towers / bogie frames have swollen and crumbled!

Looking online and searching earlier threads it seems the only route now is through the Italian company that has re created the frame and gear towers. The cost is quite high though, the main frame and two gear towers / bogie kits is going to be GBP 130.
Pretty sure I paid less than GBP 200 for the entire loco when it was new out in 2002.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/i...52963:g:06sAAOSwh1paTPYO

https://www.ebay.co.uk/i...068a1:g:S4UAAOSwwPdcCBca

To date they have sold 122 frames and 52 bogie gear tower kits, so I am not alone!

I guess the cost is worth it in today’s market and I will have to take it on the chin.
To be fair, I have a large number of Marklin Locos and this is the first time I have had this issue.
I have had the issue with a few Hornby Locos though, again made in the early 2000s.

As has been reported the last time this issue was raised, Marklin have no stock of spares for these part numbers.

It's good to know that there is a remedy for this problem. At least you will once again be able to run your loco!

I agree Ray, I was getting concerned that the loco would be a complete write off.

—————-

Exploded parts diagram and spare part numbers can be found here

https://www.maerklin.de/...&artikelnummer=37521

Incidentally, I am aware of another current thread that has degenerated into another Made in XXXXXXXX argument.
I would be grateful if we could all keep this thread to what has happened and how to repair the loco. It is what it is, and the loco in question is now 18 years old, so as Ray said, it is good that another company has gone to the bother of manufacturing the required parts.

Before I place my order, does anyone that has done this repair think that I will require any further parts, other than the two links in my first list? Thank you.

In time I will return to this thread and update it with details and photos of the rebuild.

I don't have a Seetal crocodile in my collection. Are all versions prone to Zincpest or only some models?

I think we can only be confident of the later versions, such as 37511, which have different part numbers and are hopefully constructed of high quality zinc.

Certainly there are many reports of the first two versions 37521 in brown and 37522 in green suffering from zincpest.

AFAIK only model no. 37521.

I really hope that those two or three members who are prone to heart attacks when somebody mentions Zinkpest and Märklin in the same sentence won't read the following, but a couple of years ago I published a list of the series numbers which were certainly affected in the German Stummi forum: https://www.stummiforum.de/viewt...17&start=25#p1347233

EDIT: A further list of 37521 with series numbers (either affected or not) can be found in the Swiss HAG forum: https://www.forum.hag-info.ch/fo...p;postID=39470#post39470

Isn't the best option to simply return it to Marklin? I had a similar issue with a Brawa piece (body only and their first China work), and they sent me a new body in about a week with absolutely no charge.

Lucky you. ThumpUp Unfortunately, Märklin is not Brawa. The case of the crumbling 37521 is too far back, according to Märklin. The current company (with its new ownership) also doesn't feel responsible for what happened in the pre-Kingsbridge and pre-Pluta days. They say that the parts for the 37521 are neither available anymore nor do the current parts match those in the older, *****-made model.

Apparently, they would make you an offer to buy a current production Seetal crocodile for a slightly cheaper price.

Jay,

Your 39560 is unaffected, as are all large crocodiles to the best of my knowledge.

The most commonly affected Marklin models are:-
37521 Brown Seetal Crocodile - plus some reports of 37522 Green Seetal Croc
36805 Kof
36808 Kof
45650 PRR Boxcar Set
48450 DB Hopper Set (Updated thanks to Tom)
29570/1 And 29575/6 New York Central Starter Sets, wagons only affected, not the PA1

I think I have seen mention of some DB Hopper Cars too, but do not have the product number?

Hi Ashley, phew, thanks for that information! I'm now brave enough to open the box and have a peek.
I will also give it a little run. This will be the first time that I start up the layout since the loss of my son
one and half year ago. However I have been trying to keep in touch with the latest via the forum.(Off topic) In memory of my son I have also been dabbling in Z scale as you will be able to see in the small scale forum.
Kind regards
Jay

A message appeared today in the Swiss HAG forum that a Trix 22727 (green Seetal baby crocodile) is now also affected by Zinkpest. This specific unit apparently was still test run about a year ago and ran at that time.

The important information is the date of manufacture of the Trix 22727 Seetal . Does it fall in to the 2004 - 2005 year anniversary of manufacture of the affected Marklin
items?

I have been checking through my collection while I wait for my spares from Italy to arrive.
I have a 45650 PRR Box at set. I have examined it closely including taking the metal chassis out of the box cars. As of today it is completely unaffected and it is now 15 years old. So I hope it remains OK.

According to my records, Trix 22727 was produced in the year 2001 (same as Märklin 37521).

Hi,

In addition to the zinkpest of the frame, also the plastic gears tend to break a kind of plasticpest. The model was a disaster from the point of view of quality!. My 37521 went to Marklin some years ago for frame repairs, it was then lost by the mail and Märklin sent to me a new one, but these new one then had plasticpest with the gears, and I had to request new gears that were available in that time.
I have also the 37522 the green one but until now no problem has rised. Will see.

Regards

Eduardo
