I'm sure this will be very welcome news for 3-rail modellers of american prototypes. The fact that it's available in four different liveries makes it even better! |

Interesting - when I was at the Cologne IMA a couple weeks ago ESU had the Santa Fe version running on their layout and I think I assumed it was just a demo for the LokSound decoders. I would have looked closer if I had known it was a new ESU product.

Now I have to say that this NEW ESU SD-40-2 is going to turn heads and empty wallets in North America.
When it comes to ESU their name says it all, “Especially Sensationally Unmistakable!” That's ESU! Okay, okay I made it up but it done ring true, their products are wonderful, bar none!

As I understand it they should offer (at least) four different road numbers for each livery to maximise the success on the US market. More road numbers may follow if the locos are successful. |

It will be interesting to see how successful these will be. Several manufacturers (Athearn, Bachmann, Bowser, Broadway Ltd, Kato, Intermountain, & Scale Trains) have recently released the SD40-2 and some of these use ESU decoders. |

I think ESU North America made a huge impact to modellers in this country with their diesel motor Loksound decoders (Loksound Select = only available through ESU North America) with so many prototypical variants and different chimes/horns/headlight arrangements, they've supplied a hungry market for authentic sounds and other unique features, however some modellers may shy away from the locos 4 rubber tyres., time will tell.

This is fantastic news for me. I tried unsuccessfully to convert American sourced versions of the GP35 & SD70ACe locos to C-track before. My other ESU models please me very much with their quality. Have reserved the Union Pacific and Santa Fe version at my dealer. Any one here with info on the couplers on the models? My USA rolling stock is all Marklin sourced. Now at least i have hope again for the SD70Ace as well. Are you listening ESU? |

Any news about the Sd40-2 from ESU ?
On all pictures it seams as this is actually models from Scale Trains. They make their models with ESU electronics, so a joint cooperation to make the locos is very likely.
I like the Union Pacific # 3773, but i dont like the small box in rear of the left cab side. That small box push the numbers a bit forward, so 3773 is not in the center of the cab.
It does not look good, and it seams that this small box only was mounted on a few locos. Much better without that small box.
The result is something like this: |3773' |
Instead of this: |3773| |

Is the sound prototypical correct? |

If the're is one that sound "true", this is the one IMHO |

I received my BNSF version earlier in the week, we tested it at the dealer, worked fine for about two minutes, took her home, placed her on the track and as soon as I hit the "Stop Bar" on my CS3 a short was immediately created by the ESU loco.
I moved the loco to the programming track, the same thing happened.
According to my dealer, many Europe based dealers do not ship these loco's anymore due to the number of comebacks and DOA units. My other local dealer in South Africa's response when I told about this was " I will not touch those locomotives" .
Has anyone else on the forum had this experience?
It's a pity, I is a very good looking locomotive.

It's a pity, I is a very good looking locomotive. the only other thing I could recommend is take the housing off and see if you find anything unusual, as you said sending it back to Europe becomes expensive., if you can't find anything you may have to return it to ESU, what setting did you choose for your tracks ? its not set for DC ? A Youtube video by a German Stummiforum member demonstrating a a clearance problem with the loco´s fuel tank colliding with Maerklin turnout lanterns (see 3:05-3:15): In the Youtube comments and in below Stummiforum thread it is mentioned that the model is Scaletrains Rivet Counter SD40-2 sold by ESU. The Stummiforum thread addresses also the turnout lantern issue. Without lantern in place, there is no problem. https://www.stummiforum.de/viewtopic.php?t=176219 |

It is Märklins fault by place gear lever on the wrong side of the gear. It is a design flaw of the C-tracks turnout. In fact should Märklin place the gear lever on the straight side of the turnout. |

I own two of these SD40-2 monsters by Mehano, which behave on C track, while the motor performance is more in the range of on/off. I am tempted to demote them to dummy status and create a three-locomotive "lash-up" dominated by an ESU 31450. http://www.esu.eu/produk...n/baureihe-sd40-2-in-h0/ |
