If you need a new MS2 and don't already have a Br74 it could be an attractive purchase. I have done this in the past when I've needed a new controller. |

I see that the 36183 specs note that the pantographs have no electrical connection.
I've noticed this in more and more new Elloks recently.
Is there a trend away from providing power via overhead wires, and if so, why? |

My perspective is that with the advent of digital most of the need to supply power via overhead wires has gone away. With analog locos that was the only way to run two trains independently on the same track. Catenary is still vital for the proper look of running electric locos in my opinion but not for functionality. Of course if you already have a functional catenary system this trend is unfortunate and I assume that it is mainly cost driven. |

The "Hobby" locos have never had "live" pantographs and the Br193 is a continuation of that series. Those locos with remote pantographs also are not connected electrically as it would be impossible to achieve continuity of supply.
Jim is also correct in saying that the main reason for powering from the overhead for multi train operation is no longer needed with digital operation. I also feel that powering from the track gives a better electrical performance, but I know that others dispute this. |

I asked Maerklin about this theme, when I was waiting for my new Insider Crocodile 39567. They answered, locos with a digital controllable up- and down moving pantograph Maerklin can and will not offer taking the power via a catenary system. It is technically to complicate, expensive and of course for digital locos not necessary. So yes, I think it is a trend. But I think sooner or later someone of the MRR producer will reoffer it as a very special new feature, like the steam in a steamer or a smoking Diesel. But I think a non current-carrying catenary system makes your life much easier and cheaper. You do not have to think about power input, signal settings, brake modules, etc.

In my experience you have a much more consistent electrical connection with track current than you have using catenary, especially with C track. I forgot to mention and Ray is correct in pointing out, that none of Märklin's power operated pantographs are electrically functional either. I assume that making them operate and making them also be isolated and able to conduct power would be too costly, particularly considering the decline in using catenary for real operations. Times change and we all move on. I for one love the few power operated pantograph locos which I own and I find them to be a lot of fun, even if they can't operate from the overhead wires. |

Of course, I can say that 2 p.m. is the regular wake up time in Goeppingen. No, I agree that there is probably no reason to worry about this item, but it is nice to think that Märklin will fill this significant hole in their track system. I also think that we will see the new turntable at the 2019 Nürnberg Toy Fair next year. |

Yes, there is a new turntable coming, to be announced in the 2019 New Items and will be for C track. It is reputed to have an 11 degree angle between tracks, so will not match any existing roundhouse. Marklin is reputed to be making a laser cut roundhouse to match, and one rumour I heard is that the stocks of the roundhouse already exist at Marklin. The 11 degree angle is reputed to match the turnouts of C track points, but i don't know of any point that matches this, and it is a crazy reason for selecting the angle anyway. It would have been more sensible to make a 7.5 degree or 15 degree step turntable. An even more sensible idea would be to buy the design of the 7686 turntable off Roco/Fleischmann and make C track clip in tracks for it.

Something that no one has mentioned, so I'll put my 2 1/2 cents worth in - I suspect there will be a Marklin Metall set of some sort in 2019, given that there has been a Marklin Metall item issued every 5 years since 1999. - 2004 - Supermodel Excavator #10900 “Menck Bagger” - 2009 - #10110 Set (reissue of 1011 Set) - 2014 - Tower Crane #10891 - 2019 - New Set??
