This is the Sixth Edition (Fifth update) of the List - update includes quite a few updates. Please feel free to send me new links

Firstly I hope this post has been made in the right sub-section of the Forum, but as it relates to all things required to build a layout I think it should go here. If the Admins think this is useful please feel free to make it a sticky.

A lot of this Forum is devoted to the locomotives and rolling stock that form the bulk of our collections and over which we can get very excited and passionate, but what next, you have now purchased some locos and rolling stock and want to build a layout, what do you need, and what products are available in the marketplace, what choices do you have. Some manufacturers are more well known that others, but hidden away and often unknown are other manufacturers who make interesting products and may make that specific item that you seek for your layout.

Over the years I have developed a small list of lost of companies who make Layout / Landscaping items, some have come from posts on this Forum or Stummi, others I have found whilst search and exploring the internet, and I though it might be useful to have a thread solely devoted to these items so that new comers to the hobby and experienced layout builders looking to modify or refresh their layout have a resource they can use to look for that right item, or try something new.

This list does not include the numerous Ebay suppliers (and there are some good Chinese suppliers of trees, lights, people and cars) maybe some of these can be added later, and the list mostly focuses on manufacturers rather than retailers of the products. The first version of this list heavily references my interests which are; European layout in HO scale; and so this list focuses on items that could be used to build such a layout. I am aware that there are other manufacturers making products for N gauge and Z gauge and many making items for US themed layouts which are not reflected in this initial list. Likewise I have identified a section for Turnout motors but since I have no involvement with such items yet it is blank and needs Forum members to add to this section.

I hope that other Forum members will add to this list and fill in the blanks, and add any other new and interesting manufactures over time, I will try and update this list from time to time so I hope it will provide a useful resource for all Forum members.

Finally, many items over the years have been in production for limited periods of time, or companies may have ceased trading or been purchased by others, but these older items can often be found on Ebay and other auction sites

Large Scale Manufacturers

These companies produce a wide range of products for the construction of a layout, producing combinations of plastic and/or laser-cut models, catenary, bridges, viaducts, tunnel portals, walls, landscaping products, lights, people, vehicles, electrical control equipment/decoders, backgrounds, paints, and the like.

Hi Glenn,

Now that's some list, if you can't build a layout from that lot, there's no hope for you...

Great work in putting the list together.

Note that Merker figures are now owned by Preiser. They still produce a handful of new items each year at Nurnberg, but I don't know if they are re-issues of previous items of their own or Preiser, or if they are totally new items.

There are a number of other manufacturers of wagon loads, at least one that you don't list is used by marklin for wagon loads. I'll have to look at some items when I get home to check who it is.

Haven't checked through your list of vehicles, but have you checked you have all the manufacturers supplying Porsche cars for the 45051 through 45058 70 years of Porsche wagons due from Marklin this year (announce din Summer NI). The vehicle on the 45051 is a manufacturer I don't recall hearing of, and isn't in your list, but I can't remember who it is Blushing. I think you have all the others, but worth checking.

Nice job.

I think https://www.preiser-figuren.de/ is a site maintained by a model shop, and not the official Preiser website, but for finding figures, its the best there is given Preiser's own site is a bit lacking.

Is https://www.artitecshop.com (Aritec) on the list? They make model accessories and freight loads from resin. (figures buildings scenery etc).

http://www.protoloads.com/ (Protoloads) makes some interesting wagon load content.

No not consumed in the bush fires yet. It is thankfully a good way from us, although we now have lots of aircraft overhead en route to Manchester as the normal landing pattern brings the aircraft in over Saddleworth which is on fire.

So Merten figures are now part of Preiser. Or is Merker a different brand?

The Porsche sets are being made mostly by the usual suspects with the odd one being Autocraft but I have been unable to find a website so if anyone can help???

If you find anymore wagon loads or others let me know and I can add them

Thanks

For Preiser I have added the correct website and kept the shop as I think they are useful references

Artitec is on the list but with the .NL website

Protoloads now added

This is a brilliant resource, Glenn. Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce it. Perhaps our wonderful Webmaster could make it a sticky?

For turnout motors can I suggest the addition of Viessmann 4554/4558. Not cheap but very reliable and with the bonus of positive feedback on point motor position.

Thanks Bob, I have added Viessmann turn out motors. Are these tortoise motors? I have see this term used often and wondered is this a make of motor or type of motor?

I am not sure exactly what a tortoise motor is but these are genuine 'above ground' motors (not for underneath the base board). Here is a picture of a 4554 -
4554.jpg
The operating arm fits into the oblong hole that you can see in the end.

As shown, this is for K-track but there is also a C-track version.

Tortoise appears to be a brand name
http://www.newmodellerss...tortoise_point_motor.htm
but I guess the name might be loosely applied to any slow motion accessory motor

Tortoise is a brand name, and while the name does seem to get applied to any slow motion point motor, there are significant differences.

Other slow motion motors which use a DC motor (I make the distinction because I understand there are some around with memory wire) as distinct from using R/C servos are Fulgarex and another very similar one whose name escapes me, but seems to come out of the same factory.

OK, glad to hear you are (currently at least) safe from the fire and smoke. Yes I did mean Merten for the figures, sorry for the bum steer.

I'll try and get to looking at wagon loads over the weekend. It's going to be too hot to mow lawns, whatever the missus says!

That smoke looks like it is getting close ... hope you have asuitable cellar to put the Marklin into for safe keeping ... OhMyGod

Right, now on to the accessories, I found two loads from the Czechoslovakian manufacturer that Marklin seems to be using ...

20180630_121112.jpg
20180630_121125.jpg

The short load is from the 46059 wagon and the long one is from the 48638 Intermodellbau Dortmund 2018 wagon.

I think you have already listed Joswood (see my packing case purchases in the 'accessories' topic).

Still a way off and it's got to cross the canal and a motorway before getting anywhere near us, so I think the basement will not be needed. I did find this little fella in our garden last night;

Hi Glenn,
For some time I have purchased accessories from YD Models in France:
Here are the loads: (as an example the YDCH00504E at bottom of page is 4 x typical tarpaulin covered loads in resin).
YD model accessories
On page 2 are 1950s style containers.

They also do replacements for REE, Lima, Jouef, Hornby Acho etc. details including metal NEM coupler pockets, springs, roof vents, buffers, coach interiors etc. which have other applications.
A small range of vehicles, scenery and figures too.

Kimball
HO Scale - Märklin (ep II-III and VI, C Track, digital) - 2 rail HO (Queensland Australia, UK, USA) - 3 rail OO (English Hornby Dublo) - old clockwork O gauge - Live Steam 90mm (3.1/2 inch) gauge.

Under vehicles its Hümmer or Huemmer, but not Hummer, which makes searching a whole lot easier.
Seems they are a manufacturer of promotional items, they make company promotional items for many brands, umbrellas, hats, etc, the usual assortment. The website ( https://huemmer-werbung.de/werbeartikel/ ) isn't usefull as the stuff you are looking for won't be 'sold' generally, as they are give-aways at events, and thus only found on the 2nd hand markets.

Another couple of links from brochures I picked up in Dortmund ...

87 Train is a spanish company doing catenary and platform/goods accessories.

Mafen seems to be the host company for the one above, so is probably the only link needed, as they link to 87train and the N gauge equivalent on their web page. The Mafen brochure i picked up was for SBB signals, but there are also Renfe and other items on their product page. Worth a browse through.

Also has anyone done anything to make this a sticky topic (I keep coming to it from the "recent active discussions" list)? If not seems like it would be worth while to do so.

A couple of years ago there was a discussion on this Forum to try and build a database of transfer decals used in kits and the like so people could produce their own 'replacement' transfer decals in particular from redundant kits. I seem to recall member Kweekalot was also interested in this idea.

Does anyone know if this happened, and if so can someone give me a link to the relevant thread so I can include it here, I have performed a search but this was not too helpful.

Thanks ThumpUp

Hello Glenn,

The decal bank is a sticky topic in the Faller section, see here: https://www.marklin-user...er-Decal-Bank#post460438

I have also tried to set up a decal bank on FAM, (see here: http://www.alte-modellbahnen.de/FallerDecals.htm) with the same result as here on M-U, almost no one but me scans their decals and add them to the decal archive.

Thanks Marco I knew you would reply.

I guess we can upload any kit decals to the above sticky I appreciate it is intended for Faller but I am sure no one will object to the odd Kibri and Vollmer decals being included, besides the way Viessmann are purchasing the independent kit makers they will soon all be one manufacturer anyway Woot Woot

I have quite a few kits that I have yet to scan and upload the decals for general use (well I have yet to build the kits) most are still sealed, but it is on my list of tasks to complete and so I will add them in time to the thread.

All the best Marco ThumpUp ThumpUp

Happy New Year Glen!

I was very happy to "stumble" upon your list today. I appreciate your efforts on everyone's behalf.

I did notice a favorite of mine that appears to be absent from your list:

Vampisol (www.vampisol.de) located in Hann Münden, Germany ... one of my favorite small cities located on my favorite historical rail line, the Dransfelder Ramp. They are a small manufacturer that produces unique HO and O scale models, many from the Nieder Saxon region. Besides buildings, bridges, tunnel portals and other roadside items, they also produce modelling materials including IMHO a very interesting new stone wall modelling system called "Stone Free".

The site is in German so when I'm lazy and don't want to put the effort into reading, I cheat and use Google translate ;-)

Rob

Happy New Year Glenn, and thanks for maintaining the useful list.

Oh by the way, Tillig also do a track underlay ready-ballasted. They call it Styrostone, it comes in both brown and grey colour.
Tillig supply this track bedding system for their HO-Elite tracks, and also for the Tillig TT gauge track.

Regards,

Thanks for this Rob, looks like they make some interesting items, and I like the Stone Free stone wall system.

They are now added under the Independent company listing

Happy New Year to you and glad you enjoyed the list ThumpUp ThumpUp

Happy New year to you Kimball, I enjoyed putting this list together, and in doing so I was surprised just how many different manufacturers there are out there making MRR related items, and I am sure there is more to come. There are many Chinese suppliers on Ebay making people, cars, animals, trees, lights and fences etc, and I have tried a few and some of the stuff is actually quite good. Maybe I will try and do some photos of some items so people can judge for themselves as they can be a useful source for people working to a budget.

Thanks for the Tillig trackbed which I have now added, although I am sure there is another mainstream brand that I am missing..............

I have also added Tillig tram system as a new item as think this is a wonderful system for anyone looking to add a tram system

All the best

Sorry I have no experience of Hobby King, but I have added them under the list of companies supplying landscaping products and hopefully some will try them and offer some feedback.

By the way Forum readers, please feel free to offer feedback on any of the companies detailed on the list, in particular the small / newer companies so other Forum members can read your thought / comments

Forum Members I am trying to find out some information about the following kit;

43328128_1735674039892177_5239105256322760704_o.jpg

If I search Hornbach then I get a German DIY company.

If I follow the weblink http://www.aero-naut.de I get a modelling company that makes items for model planes and model boats but not buildings like this one.

I am assuming the company used to make model kits but does so no longer, can anyone please confirm this or point me elsewhere where we can get a list of MRR related models

Thanks

looks like the model was made for Hornbach, as searching for "Hornbach Modellbau Markt" produces this link at the top of the list. Not a bad price for the kit either.

I suspect it is laser cut, and many of the boat kits appear to be laser cut, which may be why they went to aero-naut to produce it.

The building does look like a DIY shop similar to B&Q in the UK.

Ahhh good find Alan

As a promo item I will not add it to the list, but a good price (€39.99) for an item that could very easily be kitbashed into anything involving a large shed

Hmm, attempting to order one, but the only billing addresses they accept are in Germany and France. The web site also says that deliveries will only take place in Germany!

Rats, that would be a rather nice addition to a layout - It is listed as 1:87 - HO scale.

Also it seems the only physical store is in Munchengladbach.

With reference to the Magnorail system, I came across this interesting video of a sizable installation being used to move multiple vehicles, mostly cars. As this system does not require batteries nor expensive in vehicle installations, this may offer an alternative to some modellers

Everard Junction has done a great job on explaining the magnorail system, its installation and uses, its benefits and some limitations.
The ability to just use any scale vehicle and do nothing more than attache the guide sled to the bottom of it is a great benefit.

Running cars over a railroad crossing would be a massive challenge with the thing, but if your only trying to simulate city traffic without any traffic signals, stopping or yielding its a great solution.
Using it for a small amount of bicyclists that disappear under a bridge and then stop to come out minutes later would add a great new twist to a layout.

There's a youtube video sequence by an Australian bloke that has combined magnorail and faller-car systems to water craft on a lake traffic emulation.
Toys of tin and wood rule!

Thanks Glenn - an interesting system.

There are certainly restrictions with the system as you have mentioned. The cyclist idea is great and could easily be done, or a boat on a canal goes into a tunnel emerges later so as not to be too frequent.

Hello Alan,

just found your post from January this year. Are you still looking for this Hornbach model?

https://www.ebay.de/itm/...t-50-Jahre-/401737692654

Here at ebay they say still have 4 available. Hornbach's website says it is sold out at Hornbach.

But aero-naut (the producer) even has dealers in GB. See here:

http://www.aero-naut.de/en/company/dealer-locator/

Perhaps one of them has a Hornbach DIY still available?

Best Regards

Wolfgang

I haven't seen - or maybe have missed, in which case apologies! - one manufacturer I discovered recently - Frateschi Trens Eletricos, of Brazil.
Apart from their trains (DC, very handsome), carriages and wagons they also have a small range of buildings, not over-expensive. I have purchased one, 1524 - Predio de apartamento (an apartment block) from an ebay shop dedicated to Frateschi products, including locos and rolling stock, but have barely looked at it yet.
