Firstly I hope this post has been made in the right sub-section of the Forum, but as it relates to all things required to build a layout I think it should go here. If the Admins think this is useful please feel free to make it a sticky.

A lot of this Forum is devoted to the locomotives and rolling stock that form the bulk of our collections and over which we can get very excited and passionate, but what next, you have now purchased some locos and rolling stock and want to build a layout, what do you need, and what products are available in the marketplace, what choices do you have. Some manufacturers are more well known that others, but hidden away and often unknown are other manufacturers who make interesting products and may make that specific item that you seek for your layout.

Over the years I have developed a small list of lost of companies who make Layout / Landscaping items, some have come from posts on this Forum or Stummi, others I have found whilst search and exploring the internet, and I though it might be useful to have a thread solely devoted to these items so that new comers to the hobby and experienced layout builders looking to modify or refresh their layout have a resource they can use to look for that right item, or try something new.

This list does not include the numerous Ebay suppliers (and there are some good Chinese suppliers of trees, lights, people and cars) maybe some of these can be added later, and the list mostly focuses on manufacturers rather than retailers of the products. The first version of this list heavily references my interests which are; European layout in HO scale; and so this list focuses on items that could be used to build such a layout. I am aware that there are other manufacturers making products for N gauge and Z gauge and many making items for US themed layouts which are not reflected in this initial list. Likewise I have identified a section for Turnout motors but since I have no involvement with such items yet it is blank and needs Forum members to add to this section.

I hope that other Forum members will add to this list and fill in the blanks, and add any other new and interesting manufactures over time, I will try and update this list from time to time so I hope it will provide a useful resource for all Forum members.

Finally, many items over the years have been in production for limited periods of time, or companies may have ceased trading or been purchased by others, but these older items can often be found on Ebay and other auction sites

I think https://www.preiser-figuren.de/ is a site maintained by a model shop, and not the official Preiser website, but for finding figures, its the best there is given Preiser's own site is a bit lacking.

Thanks Bob, I have added Viessmann turn out motors. Are these tortoise motors? I have see this term used often and wondered is this a make of motor or type of motor?

No not consumed in the bush fires yet. It is thankfully a good way from us, although we now have lots of aircraft overhead en route to Manchester as the normal landing pattern brings the aircraft in over Saddleworth which is on fire.

So Merten figures are now part of Preiser. Or is Merker a different brand?

The Porsche sets are being made mostly by the usual suspects with the odd one being Autocraft but I have been unable to find a website so if anyone can help???

Under vehicles its Hümmer or Huemmer, but not Hummer, which makes searching a whole lot easier.
Seems they are a manufacturer of promotional items, they make company promotional items for many brands, umbrellas, hats, etc, the usual assortment. The website ( https://huemmer-werbung.de/werbeartikel/ ) isn't usefull as the stuff you are looking for won't be 'sold' generally, as they are give-aways at events, and thus only found on the 2nd hand markets.

87 Train is a spanish company doing catenary and platform/goods accessories.

Mafen seems to be the host company for the one above, so is probably the only link needed, as they link to 87train and the N gauge equivalent on their web page. The Mafen brochure i picked up was for SBB signals, but there are also Renfe and other items on their product page. Worth a browse through.

Also has anyone done anything to make this a sticky topic (I keep coming to it from the "recent active discussions" list)? If not seems like it would be worth while to do so.

I have also tried to set up a decal bank on FAM, (see here: http://www.alte-modellbahnen.de/FallerDecals.htm) with the same result as here on M-U, almost no one but me scans their decals and add them to the decal archive.

I was very happy to "stumble" upon your list today. I appreciate your efforts on everyone's behalf.

I did notice a favorite of mine that appears to be absent from your list:

Vampisol (www.vampisol.de) located in Hann Münden, Germany ... one of my favorite small cities located on my favorite historical rail line, the Dransfelder Ramp. They are a small manufacturer that produces unique HO and O scale models, many from the Nieder Saxon region. Besides buildings, bridges, tunnel portals and other roadside items, they also produce modelling materials including IMHO a very interesting new stone wall modelling system called "Stone Free".

The site is in German so when I'm lazy and don't want to put the effort into reading, I cheat and use Google translate ;-)

Hmm, attempting to order one, but the only billing addresses they accept are in Germany and France. The web site also says that deliveries will only take place in Germany!

Rats, that would be a rather nice addition to a layout - It is listed as 1:87 - HO scale.

Also it seems the only physical store is in Munchengladbach.

Everard Junction has done a great job on explaining the magnorail system, its installation and uses, its benefits and some limitations.
The ability to just use any scale vehicle and do nothing more than attache the guide sled to the bottom of it is a great benefit.

Running cars over a railroad crossing would be a massive challenge with the thing, but if your only trying to simulate city traffic without any traffic signals, stopping or yielding its a great solution.
Using it for a small amount of bicyclists that disappear under a bridge and then stop to come out minutes later would add a great new twist to a layout.

There's a youtube video sequence by an Australian bloke that has combined magnorail and faller-car systems to water craft on a lake traffic emulation.

I would agree, obviously British cars, I think British Leyland made a lot of cars with square wheels once upon a time
