Hi friends

I just purchase a Kof II 5579, my idea is to repaint and give it an aged look. I would like to place a sound decoder, I have been watching an ESU V4, may be mfx, (M4), What do you think? Has someone done it before?

Many thanks!!!

Jaime

The Köf II 5579 is gauge 1 and shall have a digital decoder already inside.

But why not a new Märklin 60976 mSD3 decoder for a Diesel?

Ok, may be a good idea, but , the diesel sound in the mSD3 is a "generic" diesel sound? in ebay sellers offers Esu with especific kof sound . Can I to change the sound in the mSD3 decoder??

thanks !!

Poooh, I do not know the sound itself, but Märklin offers a huge new sound library.

The point is, you only can get all this information, data and files for downloading via the German Märklin webside. If you cannot find it sendme a PM please.

Also they offer sound projects for steam, Diesel and e-locos especially for the mSD3.

But I never heard the Diesel sound.

Cool

The already build in decoder of the 5579 is most likely a first generation 1-gauge digital decoder, which is basically a very primitive DCC decoder, and it will not run on a controller using the MM protocol. If at works on a multi protocol decoder; I don't know.

Märklin did have an offer for a few years in the 1990s, offering to exchange the older DCC decoder type to a newer, running on MM, so it is possible that your decoder has been changed; but in most cases locs sold on Ebay have the old type.

ESU has a decoder made for 0-gauge, it is smaller and cheaper than the XL-decoder; but big enough for the current consumption of a KöF.

I think ( but haven't tried ) that using a H0-decoder like the mSD3 will be too small; if you plan to put your KöF to work with plenty of wagons; but it is possible if you let it run alone or with very few wagons. I know some uses H0-decoders for the 5739 / 5740 "Rottenkraftwagen".

Per.

Cool

Cool

I know that some is using the small decoders in the KöFs; but I don't know how well it works if the KöF pulls many wagons.

On a small indoor layout it probably works well; but if you use it for long distance pulling of many wagons on your beautiful garden layout it might need a larger decoder.

However, the ESU decoders are over-current and over-heating protected; so I don't think you'll destroy anything by trying.
