Please don't do this without wearing wooden shoes, as we all do in the Netherlands! |

Using cartridges to start engines is an old trick. For a diesel engine it means you don't have to rely on a battery which may not have enough charge. Aircraft used to have cartridge starters too. The Royal Navy Sea Venom fighters from the 1950s used them. Also if you've ever watched the 2004 version of the film "The flight of the Phoenix" you have that nerve-wracking scene at the end when Dennis Quaid manages to start the engine on the very last cartridge! I find it a much more dramatic version than in the original film. |

Mostly Marklin.Selection of different eras and European railways Small C track layout, control by MS2, 100+ trains but run 4-5 at a time.

That is one of my favourite movies, and you are right, it's gripping and you're urging that engine to start - in the comfort of your home! Saw it first time on the big screen and I'm sure the Mrs has the DVD - if not I shall ask her to add it to the bargain-bin search - happy to watch it any time |

Thanks for your post and video Ray. I had in the back of my mind that I read of this before. A revisit reveals that it was first introduced on the Junkers Jumo 205 diesel engine in 1936 Further search found some interesting information : https://en.wikipedia.org...i/Coffman_engine_starterhttps://en.wikipedia.org...Aircraft_engine_startingRegards, Philip
