What is the smallest diameter curve a Marklin Z can do?

What is the smallest diameter a end can have and still allow Marklin locos and rolling stock to run ok? The inside of my track oval is 15.25 inches and I want to put a figure 8 inside it. Maybe I can use flex track. Any suggestions for steam loco and cars that will run on a tight turn? Thanks Ron

From the latest Marklin Yearbook, this is the details of the Z Gauge curves. The smallest has a diameter of 290mm.  These are the actual curve pieces.

You could try 8510 / 145mm radius curves, but I have no experience with them, so can't comment as to how well stuff will run on them.

I have used the 145mm radius curves in my "first" layout. I'm currently redesigning the whole layout to remove them. I can get trains to travel around them but.....The Locos and the carriages need to be short. Also the entire consist is usually only three or four carriages. And don't even consider using the 145mm on a gradient. Just makes it worse. Longer passenger coaches etc derail or stall due to the tightness of the curve.
I use AnyRail design software and it has a feature where you can set the minimum radius so that when designing with flex track it will highlight any tightness issues.

Z-scale can go very tight radius. Take a look at the cigar-box layouts here: http://www.kolumbus.fi/zetakari/cigar.htmlThe smallest radius is 65mm. Rokuhan offers small radius track, down to 120mm and 70mm radius: http://www.rokuhan.com/english/products/track/You'll likely only be able to run 0-6-0 locos such as the Marklin 8800 series, or the 8864 diesel switcher. Cars should be the very shortest wheelbase cars, such as the 8624 ballast cars, 8611 oil cars or 86331 gondolas. |
