In this variant I turned the station a bit to get more walking space around it. The Helix is now placed under the station level and starts at +50cm to +90cm. The station level itself is at +1,05m. Both the turn table and the transfer table will only be used as parking space for locs. So also this time no depot theme with scenery. Max ramp percentage: 3%. Layout overall viewThe ramp to the old station on level 1 (current table) will get a small station for some 'museum' material. Station area.More details will follow. Regards, Timaximus |

After 8 hours the table top is clean. I only need to remove some cable and feedback modules under the table. After some cleaning and sorting we can start with the real modification. Regards, Timaximus |

I simplified the layout a bit and removed the small shadow area at the south side. Instead of the shadow area we get a small shunting area at level '0' with a small elevation. Also the shuttle trains can stop here for a while. The exact position of the station plus helix frame can be justified later. Regards, Timaximus |

I optimized the layout a bit. The station (green tracks) is rotated 180 degrees and the length is increased with a 24188 piece. The helix is moved to the lower left corner. The main track (grey and black tracks) is kept at level +70cm and the station level will be at +110cm. Both the turn-table and the transfer-table are back on the station level. The red ramp can be connected from main track level to the station level as a light rail track or escape route. The shunting area (blue tracks) is also changed. I spoke with my colleague today and he was surprised about the change and all the table sections that are removed at this moment. But he liked the RC1 very much. We discussed the available walking through space under the section between the helix and the station level. So I changed the shunting area a little bit to create more walking space between the table sections. That will give us a RC2. We have only one location we need to crouch a bit but the height is increased from +65 to approx. 105cm. So maybe we can start with the building process again soon. Regards, Timaximus |

I started with the modification myself. The new ramp around the helix will be removable like the helix itself. Which is necessary for maintenance. For the removable part between the helix and the station layer see the image below. The table for the shunting area will be modified along the edges, so the table you see on picture 5 can stay there. Regards, Timaximus Edited by user 19 November 2017 21:48:25(UTC)

I make a plan for the coming period. This year we will focus on the base layer of the table. The shunting area is placed, the final pieces arrived yesterday, so now we can finish the table surface at this area. I also start gluing the second strip on the side of the 'parade' ramp. I planned a temporary loop at the end of the helix (removable) to drive around during the building period. That reduces the risk trains fall of when accidentally make a wrong switching action. The new track sections with brake and stop sections of the main track at level 0. Red: stop, Blue: brake, Black: drive, Orange: stop or brake, Yellow orange: stop or brake, White: switching area. With 14m the helix will be the longest track section. The shortest track section between the two switching areas is 2.2m long. the 4 loops at the lower right will be used as hold sections for a short period. Regards, Timaximus |

Today father finished the last table sections. So the table surface for the base level is nog ready for the rubber and the table borders from bendable Triplex. Today I was the assistant and meanwhile i sorted the remaining track parts and cleaned the table in the other areas. The rubber what is left is not enough for the large shunting area so I need to order new first. The short parade track is now stiffened with bending Triplex at both sides. So also the rough table structure at this side is finished. Regards, Timaximus |

Today we make the manhole larger inside the loop. We placed the derailing beams around the table until the north east corner. We closed the corners of the table border. We build up and closed the level at the south east side. Regards, Timaximus |

Below the new Signal plan for building fase 1, the main track level. We decide to place signals on the main level also. That is because you can see almost every track through the very open table layout. The layout for fase 1, besides the temporarily loop, is finished. We hope to finish the table borders tomorrow and start with the scenery fase next time. The temporary loop will be built during the scenery fase. The speed of progress is not as it was before but that is because my companion is in Chemo session now. So sometimes he felt not so good to build. But we both enjoy the building still like before. And that is the most important thing. But not much photo’s the coming period, sorry for that. I also will connect some power wires so the little Hobbit can enjoy the hobby again also. Best regards, Timaximus |

The fact that father is not at his best at the moment, because of the Chemo, he enjoyed the building today. We finished the table borders and updated the Helix. Now we are able to stand inside the helix and can reach everything around it. After laying the rubber and connecting the wires we can start with the scenery at level 0 , the main track. Finally we finished the table construction for level 0 and place the new rubber on it. But before that we cut the turn outs shape in the table top layer. So the decoders and actuators are reachable for maintenance. I also finished the signal plan. with 27 old vorm signals from VIESSMANN and 55 new light signals from Märklin Regards, Timaximus |

I make a small modification in the track layout to make the connection between the Helix and the Loop + Station section at level 1 more flexible to build. To do that I changed the C-track into K-track Flex. Now the position and angle can be compensated with the Flex track (purple) on the adapter plate. Regards, Timaximus |

This weekend we work further about the loop section Part A. The construction is light and stiff enough to prevent bending in the middle. After we place the Triplex borders next week the stiffens will be even greater. Regards, Timaximus |

Hello All, I restarted this Christmas so here some pictures of the progress so far. I start building the new fly over wich can be opened. The power connections of the movable table section is finished. I wired the Helix and found a solution for the wiring. Me and my son did some test driving during the holidays. He likes and chose every train on the tracks. Started with the installation of the Uhlenbrock Power 3 Boosters Schematic for the layout with signal-, switch- and feedback contact numbers.Best Regards, Timaximus |

This weekend we started with the scenery phase. The first item we worked on is the creation of a sheet piling curtain. The little man inspect the first badge of signals that arrived recently. Further I updated the feedback contacts inside the station area to create more shunting options. And (grand)pa give his whole N-scale collection to his grandson. Regards, Timaximus |

I replaced the older IB and IB-IR with a brand new IB2. The old IB's will be extra controllers around the layout. With the new IB2 I did some test driving around the layout. Now I am connecting all the feedback modules with the LocoNet via self-made LocoNet cables. YouTube link: Testdrive with met E44, BR01 en De KoploperBest Regards, Timaximus |

Yes it is winter now, in December. Because of your reply we went to the train room and found the light signals we need to test and program before we can place them along the track. This winter I will spend a lot of time with the testing, programming and placing all the signals. There will be a lot of them, form and light types. And still 20 entry light signals are missing and need to ordered at my supplier. Hopefully I finish the signal business this winter so we can start with the scenery next winter. But first I need to check the last status from the last winter, installing the feedback contacts, switch engines and rail decoders. I do not know where I stopped before summer. My son already started with the scenery and place some snow pieces along the layout. Regards, Timaximus |

Today I only place the 13 signals at 'Wisselcomplex Zuid'. The administration of the decoder addresses etc. was faulty so I need to correct this first in Excel.

All I can say is, incredible! I've just read through the whole of this and I'm amazed, the complexity is beyond me, when I start on my layout it's going to look a bit tame after this. You are a very skilled man and I'm going to copy your helix, mine won't be as big as I only need two layers. John.

I use R5 an R4 in the helix. And 10 cm per loop.
So the grade stays below 3%.

Mr Timaximus, thank you so much for posting your project with so much details, and sharing your very qualified thinking, in what is an endless "problem solving" hobby. I am just getting back into it, after a 40 year interruption, and I am learning so much from you! Your work is first class and really inspires me! Your hobbit appears pretty cool, and I hope the very best for your dad in what has to be dificultad times..... Thank you again for taking the time to share, with us!

Yesterday we place the final borders along the track around the helix. This track section is a short parade track so the border in front is kept low. When the scenery is finished a Plexiglass fence is placed. After the building activity we drive with the trains for a while. Grandpa enjoyed this day. It was a long time ago we build together for the last time. So, grandpa was very happy that he was able to came over this day. Meanwhile I am placing the rest of the signals, approx. 80 pieces. Signals S5.13 and S5.14 (right) and signals S5.11 and S5.12 (left) Current work place (temporary) Regards, Timaximus |
