I have a few older Maerklin rolling stock pieces that have developed some slight warping, though nothing serious... and certainly nothing like this on my locomotives. I'm very careful about the environment in which my trains are stored or operated, but even then, you can't prevent something that's bound to happen as a result of poor construction. Not saying the newer stuff isn't of good quality, but with very few exceptions, I haven't purchased too many new items over the last few years.

I can't blow up the images- where were the issues on the locomotive? I have a 37136 I should probably check out.

I'm getting tired of having to fix these plastic-pest issues... (and zinc) US boxcars, Kof, ALl 3 of my seetal crocodiles...

Is this the result of the plastic warping due to heat or other cause or is this another case of plastic damage from metal deterioration?

Regards

I've had to bin at least 10 plastic US box cars due to severe warping. Al my wagons including the hopper car and the caboose from my 29570 American Starter set had to go, all were released around 2005. They were stored in their boxes in a cool area so I do not believe heat was the issue.

Very annoying!

That probably is real zincpest (Made in China stuff), not a plastic problem.
The metal frame distorts and causes the plastic body to break.

This here is a case of real zincpest (deforming metal):

HO... wow: that's incredible! I don't recall seeing one quite like that, ever. The collector in me says to stick with finding those items made 20 years back or further -- at least then I can see if there are any issues present. It's hard to justify the price of some of the newer items considering you're left to wonder how they'll hold up.

The right kind/formula of aluminized zinc casting material is important. ... and outsourced makers will cut corners to save money without stringent oversight and testing. Its almost as if one has to take a sample from the liquid metal for testing every week to ensure no cheating.. its like the Olympics. Impurities in the mix are apparently the cause, that react to moisture in the air, and cause crystal formation/changes within the cast parts that then deform the parts.

Yes, the floor of the cars is fine metal - it bends and eventually breaks the plastic body. Not a plastic problem, just the well-known China zincpest.

I do not know. But at Wikipedia I found a very interesting article (in English). This article shows a picture with wheels of a Maerklin coach having the zinc pest.

You are not the only one. I don't want to find out 5 years down the line that the quality control in China sucked or at least was unable to spot things which come to light only years later!

It makes me wonder...

Regards,
Jim

I have almost all Märklin and mostly HO, although I do have a small number of Z gauge trains!
So many trains and so little time.

This thread is about deformed plastic parts.

Please ask questions about real zincpest in appropriate threads like this:
