Hi
I am considering a couple of Piko locos, 59256 Swisstravel & 57821 OBB Rh1116, I know they are both hobby locos but budget limitations dictate modest costs.
Also what do people think about Piko 58354 DB Cargo/Onrail Cargo set?

Hi Harry,
I have several Piko locos as you may have seen on my Loco thread. They are excellent value for money and in some cases are better than the equivalent Marklin Hobby loco.
A word of advice on the wagon set. I always end up changing the wheel sets on my Piko wagons to stop derailments at turnouts. I would advise you to order the AC wheels when you order the wagons so that they run sweetly on your layout. The part number is 56061 for two axles. You will need 6 of these sets for the 3 wagons in the set, so count on spending another 32 Euro or so.

It's great to hear from you in Gib again! I keep saying I going to have a short break in Gib.
I always find you information help and you did help me before, I know some dealers will change the wheels to AC free of charge, so I will ask around.

I have two Piko loco's, one hobby and one expert, I'm pleased with both of them. These were both AC models so can't attest to the wheel scenario that Ray describes, but with any of my Piko rolling stock, I changed the wheel sets regardless anyway to AC.
One thing I have noted is if you change the couplers on the Piko locomotives to the Marklin close couplers, they are too short with some rolling stock and the bumpers will hit and cause derailments when taking a curve. The resolution I found for that is using the Piko coupler extender, part 56036. Using the original Piko couplers obviously is just fine, but a consideration if you're like me and want consistency |

Is the problem with the Piko wheels specific to Piko?
I am asking because I have not noticed any problems with the wheels when the wagons of my Roco and other 2 rail manufacturers' are pulled by a Marklin loco on a Marklin layout.

Rivarossi and Lima seem to be OK too. I concur with Tom in that it is mostly my Piko and Lilliput wagons that need wheels changing. |

A track cleaning car may have problems with the tall centre-rail studs at turnouts. You can always have problems that are not related to the wheelsets. Sometimes wheelsets don't have the correct wheel spacing. In rare cases you even get derailments with Märklin rolling stock on Märklin track. |

I see on the PIKO site that if you buy rail vehicles from them directly they offer free exchange of wheelsets to AC on request. |

All of the Piko that I have bought new I hve had the wheels changed to AC at no charge. The rest that I have bought new, I've swapped the wheels out myself and sell the DC wheels on eBay. That offsets the cost of the AC wheels that I've had to buy. Works out great, and there is a market for DC wheels apparently! |

I buy DC wheels all the time from Mike. I like the flexibility of attaching some very nice Marklin wagons to my DC locos.   |
