MHI - Märklin-Händler-Initiative.

The MHI is a Märklin exclusive special model - produced in a one-time series. (something like Limited edition).

Yeah, a number of last years models (2015) were designated as being "25 jahre MHI".

AIUI the MHI deal was originally a select group of shops within Europe who had a say in one-time models to be produced by Marklin and were to be sold only through those select shops.

It seems they are now much more widely available, but still a one time production item.

It seems some dealers are authorized to distribute and entitle to sell one - time series productions by Marklin as who made good performance to sell Marklin's productions overall in latest or recent years.

I assume Marklin intends to honor the initiative and positive dealers by awarding the exclusive sale right of one-time series productions.

The new Goliath set is limited to 999 units - less then one per dealer. They won't tell us how they distribute them (first orders win, big sellers preferred, draw).

AFAIK for regular MHI items dealers can order any number of packages they want. Some items from the packages will be highly wanted, some will be shelf queens.

Insider models are MHI models (a special sort of MHI models).
There are many non-MHI one-time series today. Difficult to find rolling stock today that is not a "one-time series".
Any dealer or dealer group can order models from Märklin - and I think private persons can do the same if they are willing to take 500+ locos.
We have seen special locos for Idee+Spiel, Eurotrain, Conrad, Jim Knopf, Wilde 13, and others. Those items get a Märklin ref. number, but do not normally appear in the Märklin catalogue. Some are shown in the Insider Club News.

Märklin like to make series of 5 locos, usually with display cases or such. First appearance of a new mould could be an Insider model, second appearance in a Bellingrodt Edition (plus €50 for the wooden display case), third appearance as an Outsider model.

The "m" sign is an old Märklin logo. In the catalogue and product database and on boxes it is used to mark MHI items. I'm not sure this usage is exclusively for MHI.

MHI products (without Insider models) are announced four times a year. These are normally one-time series. And theoretically they are sold out at the company before the first piece gets shipped because theoretically they are ordered and paid by MHI and Märklin build them to order.
Practically there were some overproduced models that got dumped cheaply to clear the stocks. But that should no longer happen these days.

OT: Märklin always pay attention to small details and they use (at least) three different long forms for the abbreviation MHI.

As far as I know, it was the MHI (the Maerklin dealers association) who spend capital (fresh money ) to Maerklin, when it was in its most critical phase of insolvency. So actually they took care, that Maerklin could survive, even it was insolvent.

The Sieber family bought Maerklin later, after it was recapitalized by MHI.
