Hello Ak, When we were in Wertheim in 2011 it seemed a noteable site because of the liability to extreme floods over the years :see the date of the highest flood record inscribed on the wall in the image below. This may relate to it's position at the confluence of the Tauber and Main rivers. Perhaps this predisposition to significant flooding is the reason for the numerous pillar supports on the bridge? Nice old medieval town, the buildings reminded me of the Faller buidings on my layout! Regards, Philip

Ak, I think the close spacing of the pillars is necessitated by the apparent curve in the bridge. If too far apart the bridge would tip to the outside of the curve when a load is put on it.

Not quite down the middle of the road, but pretty close. That's my van mirror you can see in the bottom of the picture. And it went on forever at the crossing. |

A German „Keilbahnhof" (literally: wedge station) - a station located between branching tracks - offers a solution to space problems. There is for example Tornesch station near Hamburg, where a single track branch line joins a double track main line. While it saw passenger traffic in the past (see railcar on curve in front of station building), the branch line serves nowadays only industries. This design saved a lot of turnouts. Need a view block for your fiddle yard entrance? Dausenau in the Lahn river valley, 1953. How many platform tracks should a decent passenger station on a double-track mainline have under an overall roof? Two? And how many turnouts? Zero? Bad Ems in the Lahn river valley (recently). |
