Hi all, Much to my joy I recently came across a CM800 in my small collection. I had thought that this was a 3000 as labeled on the box! The clue was that the instructions were for a CM and CE 800(!) and on further inspection I found on the right side CM800 above the road number 89029. After looking through some old catalogues I have a rough idea of how old this loco is. It first appears as CM800 89005 in 1954 and lastly two years later in 1956 also 89005, from then on it becomes the 3000 in its various forms. It has only two head lamps of the small bulb type and a reversing lever. With no date code on the box or instructions I am assuming that it is from the mid 50's and it still runs as new. So smooth and quiet with more pulling power than some of my new engines. I would suggest that it was run for a few years and then put away somewhere cool and dry as there is no rusting of the running gear and no sign of little wear on the slider or drive gears. The road number leaves me a little puzzled as I have been unable to find it in any of the catalogues that I have, can anyone help? Edited by moderator 03 July 2016 08:49:53(UTC)

With that road number 89028, it should be 1954 - 1958 production (according to Koll's)
Interesting that the road number 89028 first appears in the 1959 catalogue, the year after they changed to the new road number 89005.
The catalogue images appear not to have been always updated to match production.
Hope this helps

mike. By the way, there is actually code on the box, blimmen hard to make out, this is a crop of it.... Paul Deardorff has done some extensive study into the codes and may be able to shed more light on it |

Yep ypor correct Steve!!!
I have had a look and its V7 with maybe another 7 but on the bottom of the box is 2171.
The only numbers on the front of the instruction brochure are TAN 0155 k under the Marklin bike symbol followed by CM 800 100/3 .
I am happy to know the rough age and even happier that it runs so well.

Hi Mike,
For me it's a 1957 version. The new four digit numbers were introduced in 1957 but 1958 locos already got a blue box with the picture, the first type was the sliding box. It was not unusual that the locos came with older documents, also the ....800 numbers on the models did not disappear immediately. I do not agree with Kolls order of the road-numbers. I think that Märklin just used two tools simultaneously. One tool with 89 005, the other with 89 028. Some collectors say that the ...005 was intended for sale as a single model and the ...028 was included in sets. I don't know any evidence for this thesis.
Regards
Markus

Hi Markus,
I did think that the numbers on the brochure were similar to the later codes and as TAM 0155 k could be read as manufactured January 1955(0155).
Either way I have an old loco that still runs like new!

I have my original locos from my early childhood and I can confirm that my CM800 with 2 individual bulbs and road number 89028 came with the original set (with 3 four wheel coaches of type 4000). It was bought in 1958, but may have been in stock for a year or so.
I also have a 3000 with light diffuser for 3 headlamps and road number 89005. This was bought new as a single loco in 1959 or 1960.
Both locos have a manual reversing lever on the right hand side.
Like Mike's both my locos run beautifully even though mine have seen many years of hard service and not-too-gentle handling. |
