Back in 1959, it was even more interesting, for a couple of reasons. Marklin make a beautiful model of the BB12000 which shows on the left. And the canal was still used by working boats and boatmen, ....... and their wives!! I remembered the location from one of my French magazines, Rail Passion, August 2006. And I give due acknoowledgement to Y Broncard who had the foresight to take the picture. regards Kimball |

What could be better for modeling than a train tunnel under a castle? This must make up at least 25% of the layouts in the 0700 track planning book alone :) -Brandon Exactly. Give me a castle, and I give you a tunnel: Borghetto Santo Spirito, Italy. Ambialet, France Luetzelb(o)urg, France Near Basel, Switzerland Altenahr, Germany |

I am not 100% sure, but it also looks like the tracks pass a (old) station not too far before the tunnels. I think at this point we should stop researching prototype, make things up, and then the prototypes will miraculously appear. -Brandon |

The map view does not include it, but the aerial/satellite view shows it. It appears to have run parallel or possibly joined with a switch. I have highlighted the route to hopefully help illustrate. Another bonus, the road crossed under the tracks on one side of the tunnel, loops around, and crosses back under the tracks on the other side. MMR prototype heaven! -Brandon |

Initially, the line was single-tracked. Then a second track was added, necessitating a second bore. Finally, the second track was abandoned again (the vacated tunnel became a bicycle path in 1999). More (German) info: http://www.ahrtalbahn.de/index-ahr.htm |

Matt Era 3 DB lokos, coaches and freight cars from across Europe But I do have the obligatory (six) SBB Krocs ECoS 50200, all FX and MFX decoders replaced with ESU V4s, operated in DCC-RailCom+ with ABC brake control. With the exception of the passenger wagens with Marklin current conducting couplers, all close couplers have been replaced with Roco 40397. |

USD crude oil terminal, Casper, WY, USA http://usdg.com/terminal/casper/GAPCO, Conakry, Guinea: design of a port facility for handling up to four 94 car trains per day. http://www.wiserrail.com...Gapco-Port-Facility.htmlChieftain Sand, Chetek, WI, USA http://www.railroadspecialties.com/projects.htmlJ.R. Simplot Livestock Group, Mountain Home, ID, USA "A loop track design was chosen to optimize the functionality of the track and add flexibility for future expansion while minimizing the length of track to be constructed which thereby reduced the cost of construction. In comparison to a straight siding track, a loop track does not require separate track for loaded and unloaded cars as the train continues around the loop as it unloads. This utilization of the same track for loads and unloads reduced the trackage required for a unit train by 5-6,000 ft. Therefore, this reduces the cost of construction significantly." http://www.wiserrail.com...-Simplot-Grain-Loop.htmlThe above reasoning makes such a design also for a model railroad interesting. |
