A large modular digital M* HO scale layout of the "Lippstädter Eisenbahnfreunde" MRR club, which was on display on various MRR shows throughout Germany.

The layout is inspired by a single track mainline serving a small ski resort in the German Sauerland region.

M* C track hump yard automatisation project of a vocational college in Germany. I like the space saving approach on the inclined ramp which keeps cars moving to the end of the stub track, too.

Switchman´s nightmare?

In this context, a similar looking dense 100 x 200 cm shunting module concept for two operators with M* C-track, this time with a potential connection to the outside world. I believe that the screenshots speak for themselves.swm2.pngswm3.pngswm1.png

Hi Ak,
The concept of those switching layouts is admirable, and I think they would be great fun to operate.
Some lively ideas could be introduced to plan and build the scenics, with buildings and factories, and all sorts of interchange with road traffic.
I can even imagine the use of the Kaelble road tractors, with the strasenroller street wagons (to haul railroad cars).
If you have one of the Alak Insider add-on sets from 2011, off you go.
Start with a paint factory.

However in those examples, the idea of 2 operators using the layout simultaneously is never going to work, because both yards rely on the same switch lead.
If (in the first diagram), the top yard is re-designed to use the outer right hand switch lead, it would be OK for two operators.

regards
Kimball

Hi Kimball,
Trying to imagine what you are suggesting.
Can you draw a quick sketch of what you mean?
Imagining two separated entrances into the yard, but not sure where.Blink
Or not sure which is "he outer right hand switch lead"
Guess I am on the slow train today.

In single point perspective, where do track lines meet?

Hi Mark,

Here is my idea.
Yard A has 4 sidings, the switch lead allows a shunting (switcher) loco to go back and forth without disturbing the other yards.
(Could incorporate a run around loop in the first two sidings).
Yard B is larger, and the line to yards A and C is used as the switch lead.
Yard C is presumably an industry, which requires the same lead as A, so that operating there will require synchronising with yard B.

With the 2 separate switch leads, both A and B yards can be operated or shunted independently.

Missing link...
You are right, on the photograph there is one crossover visible at the far end of the layout, but not on the track plan.

Normally I am not into material battles, but I find this private tongue in cheek documentation of a German gentleman about his Maerklin H0 scale emporium appealing. The German title translates into "The blissful model railroad smile".

A bi-level Maerklin H0 scale K-track U-shape 4 x 3 m era III layout named „Hindenburgdamm“ (= Hindenburg causeway) inspired by the North German Marschbahn complete with beach, dike, port, thatched roof house, windmill, lighthouse, a small bascule bridge spanning a tidal creek and a (short) portion of the Hindenburg causeway to the island of Sylt. It is a dogbone design with stacked return loop sidings offering basic shadow station functions; return loops represent Westerland/Sylt and Hamburg, respectively. Controls via MS2 and manual switching. The mainline is single track with train meets in the (actually existing) stations of Niebüll (with Sylt Shuttle car loading facility) and Klanxhaven (prototype: Klanxbüll). The layout is designed to serve for switching games serving ship yard, dairy and fish processing plants as well as various agricultural trades.

Hello Ak,

Interesting images.

This one (above) reminds me very much of a passenger terminus very near me !!!

Even the name "out-and-back" reminiscent of my town/station's name "Altbach" !!

Layout filling a 3 x 4 m room. A little bit crowded, but I like the freight orientation plus freight yard position (and the long mainline). And - having one myself - I am always attracted by an orange train room wall.

It took me some time to understand functionalities. For example, how does the "Hundling" branch line terminal tie in?
"Hundling" is at the right end of the long bridge (outside the picture).
49_bild4764kbuwu3b.jpg

Then I realized...it is a board suspended above the southeast layout leg.

There it is...

Then, I asked myself, how the main station and the dual track mainline are related?
97_p1000298f9rjv8.jpg
184_p1030203fbenkpk.jpg
Well, they are not: The dual track main line is an extended "Paradestrecke" (not serving the main station).
203_p1040582fbb9ks9.jpg
And the main station is part of an intricate and extended single track branch line network.

That last one is a stunner. The track plan is great and there are a number of amazing scenery elements. On the Stummi site, you can also see the very creative adaptation of well known kits. Really great stuff.

Korruptiland has a real nice feel to it. Nice lines. The E-94 with all those round roof wagons is a really cool train. Mikey
I love the smell of smoke fluid in the morning .

The nucleus of the layout, the main station.

And finally, my absolute favorite photo of this layout showing the Ätsching loop.

Beautiful! Is this a club layout or private AK? I can only hope to build something like this. Will be starting soon though.

Yes amazing amount of detail and all weathered in realistic fashion.

I wonder how he manages to access those back areas of the layout?

So I also think (as seen his roundhouse is removable) but he has hidden the seams well... must be a technique for that.
The other problem with trap doors is how they remove. You really need them to drop down since if you left it up and out - where do you put it?
Dropping them down I guess you'd need some latches and the risk of damaging the module is still high...

Flap mystery solved - small vocabulary - see sketch:

Klappe = flap
Draufsicht = top view
Seitenansicht = side view
Scharniere = hinges
Schwenkbereich = swivel range
Gelaende = terrain
