Thanks to Alan Rees and Alan from Frankfurt this was posted in Railway of Germany Form. The true nature of the studs (projections) are not known perhaps they hold the ties from shifting, or as one member remarked, Marklin pulled off a promotional stunt - Fred

Perfect, now we know the Märklin track is prototypical too... BigGrin
M, K & C tracks are ok - at least with a German layout theme...

As you say, probably to secure the ties on the banked roadbed.

here is my proposal for a new marklin track: concrete sleepers and rail clips.

The studs are actually anchoring the track to the roadbed. This is sometimes done in curves.
Notice the sleepers. Two types are used.

I have found this picture on the internet a couple of years ago.
It was taken in Germany by someone else, I do not recall the location.

It would be nice when marklin will start to offer track and points with concrete sleepers en clip connections imitation.

A similar fixing style is used on most rail networks , usually on curves where the track can move sideways when a train travels over it but I have seen a fair bit of use on points for the same problem . The spikes are about 6 foot long & inserted by a hammer head attached to a air compressor tool thru the ballast into the sub strata underneath .

Meanwhile I have found why Märklin tracks really have center studs...
